Available as US Only Bookring Review From Publishers Weekly It's not easy to find a fresh angle for the werewolf theme, but this debut novel from a Canadian writer proves that solid storytelling and confident craftsmanship can rejuvenate one of the hoariest of all horror clich‚s. Elena Michaels is a self-described "mutt," a werewolf who left her secretive pack in upstate New York for a life among humans. In the year since she relocated to Toronto, she's embarked on a career as a journalist and begun a pleasingly mundane relationship with a decent man. All this is jeopardized when she agrees to help her old packmates hunt some troublesome mutts who are converting common criminals to werewolves and leaving a trail of conspicuous carnage. Reunited with her former lycanthrope lover and forced into brutally predatory confrontations, Elena finds the call of the wild subtly reasserting itself. Armstrong prepares readers for her tale's twists with several key revisions of werewolf lore the werewolf taint is mostly hereditary, and werewolves can be killed as easily as any human or wolf. Her true achievement, though, is her depiction of werewolf nature in believably human context. Elena's feral sensibility, like her psychological vulnerabilities, seems a natural outgrowth of her abusive childhood, and her relationship with the pack is that of any prodigal child to a close-knit family. The sensuality of Elena's transformations and the viciousness of her kills mesh perfectly with her tough personality. Filled with romance and supernatural intrigue, this book will surely remind readers of Anne Rice's sophisticated refurbishings of the vampire story

I thought this book was great! It was MUCH better than anything Laurell K Hamilton has written, and I liked Armstrong's characters better. I liked how relaxed and non-dramatic the main character, Elena was. Most of the time I become frustrated with women heroines in sci-fi/adventure/mystery books because they are such a pain in the a$$ and they are so dramatic. I thought this character had a lot of class! I will definitely be reading more of this author in the future. Thank you for introducing me to this book! I am PMing synergy as we speak and will have it in the mail as soon as I receive the address.

2005 Book #19: Women of the Otherworld 01: Bitten by Kelley Armstrong My many thanks to mwade78 for looking me up after finding this book on my Wishlist. As I mentioned before I'd read books 3, 4, and I think 5 of this series, but hadn't read the first two. I knew at least this one had different main character, Elena, than the ones I'd read. I think I have to disagree with the previous reader about how undramatic Elena was through the story. I think this is what chafed at me the most and I just wasn't able to enjoy the story as much as I'd wanted to. The whole plot of why there are killings happening at her old home seems so far, so secondary to how she feels and how she just doesn't want to be like a werewolf that it seems just a waste of time covering them at all. So Elena does a lot of complaining about how she doesn't want to act like a werewolf and yet she doesn't think twice about acting like one even though I think she could. All the complaining reminded me of Louis of the Anne Rice books. I didn't care for it in that book either and much prefer Lestat for just getting on with it one way or another. Anyway, what got me the most was Elena's relationship with the werewolf Clay. This is the guy who betrayed her trust and love by biting her turning her into a werewolf to not lose her and turning all her dreams of normality into impossibilities. Yet she can't get enough of the guy. To me this is like falling madly in love with your rapist. I didn't buy it back in the day with Luke and Laura on General Hospital and I just couldn't swallow it here either. There's a zillion details given about how much Clay thinks about her and how he loves her for doing all these things for her that's supposed to, I guess, make the reader believe that really she should be with him. However, a crazed, obsessive stalker would have the same behavior and most people wouldn't think that was right. So all that drama plus the lack of mystery or whatever you call the convenient occurrences happening in the background that bring those two together, just didn't do it for me I'm sorry to say. I am grateful, though, for the chance to have read it. Thanks much.

I definitely enjoyed this book. After I finished it, it seemed like the plot was a bit thin in places, but it was so engrossing that I didn't notice while I was actually reading the book. I'm sending this on to the next person on the list. Thanks for including me in the ring!

Definitely chick lit - I have a hard time imagining a lot of guys getting into this book! That's not necessarily a bad thing... I realized somewhere about 1/2way through that the main plot was basically straight out of a romance novel - will Elena choose the good/safe guy, or the bad/dangerous guy? But there's so much other stuff going on that the book is great, even for those of us who aren't big fans of the romance genre. One side note: I had read a later book in Armstrong's "Women of the Otherworld" group before reading this one. Armstrong has a deft touch, re-introducing characters in later works so that if you've met them in other works, it adds a certain depth; but if you haven't, you don't feel you've missed anything. I will definitely keep reading Armstrong's work! Reserved for next ring member...
