This is one of Philippa Gregory's contemporary novels and it's an intriguing read. A great psychological thriller about deceit and betrayal, and full of suspense.

I'm offering this as a bookring. Anyone interested, please PM me.

OMG!!!!!!This book is so annoying lol

Ruth marries Patrick (Elizabeth & Fredericks only son) and they end up moving into a cottage that is owned by his parents. They have a baby and basically Elizabeth turns into the mother in law from hell! The whole book is about Ruth's constant battles with Elizabeth over Patrick and baby Thomas. The really annoying part is that Patrick is such a wet blanket and always sides with his parents (very much a male chauvenist pig! But only because "mummy" has always done everything for him). The last 100 pages were a nightmare to read.... i was screaming at Ruth lol A couple of times i put the book down and said to BigBoss, "thats it! i cant read any more!" but in fact, i couldnt put it down...... I wont spoil it for you and tell you what happens....lets just say i didnt see it coming and i was like "YES!!!!!!"

Have already PM'd Caro1 for an addy but no reply as yet..... Will pass on as soon as i get it.

I'm with you caffcaff! I could hardly bear to read this I was so incensed by the family's treatment of Ruth, whilst at the same time wanting to shake her! Having read Philippa Gregory's historical novels I wasn't expecting this taut, nail-biting thriller. Thanks moonforest for making this available, I really enjoyed it.

I didn't find it as "nail-biting" as some, but it was certainly a page-turner, so it got finished very quickly. All the manipolative, scheming stuff was quietly enraging. I thought the ending was quite amusing, though. The 'BBC only in the living room' rule made me laugh because my parents have more or less the same rule!
This is off to Virgulina tomorrow morning.

This was the first Philippa Gregory book that I read and it was indeed a very engaging and fast read. Now I'm curious to read her historical novels!
Ruth was so annoying that I felt like shaking her till she opened her eyes. I never knew anyone so in need of a backbone like she was! The ending was quite a surprise and a little anticlimatic but at the same time it was so very ironic!
Thanks for the BookRing moonforest! :o)

This arrived in today's mail--- I got four books all at once. Well, I have to tell you I had to stop reading (I'm on pg 69) JUST to make a journal entry!!! Thanks so much for sending this ALL the way from Portugal!!! I've read The Other Boleyn Girl, & The Queen's Fool ... I was curious about her modern fiction... POSSIBLE SPOILER: Well... to back to read about the Clearys' rush somewhere in the middle of the night for you know what... ;-)

On another note--I'm last on the list and will prob finish this rather quickly *grin* let me know if I'm to send along to another ring participiant or back to Moonforest in London for a full circle! Thanks again to all B4 me!

UPDATE: 5/12/05 I have finished reading and I see there are now MORE participants!! Yeah.. PMing next in line for address...

I enjoyed the writing and the build up although I prefer the subject matter of Gregory's other novels. I found myself identifying oddly with the woman concerning some miniscule things (M-i-law who is better at running a household) I was amazed that a successful business woman could be so inept. I have also experienced post-partum depression and while it is certainly devastating... it seemed that it was mechanism by which the character was able to lose touch gradually with her needs... Her depression didn't resonate with me as having a sense of despair... more just detachment. Either way- I enjoyed the writing style and will read more of her books. *PMed Lpree for add.

I'm sorry but I started reading this and the characters were too annoying. I couldn't bear to read any more about Elizabeth's controlling and Ruth's serious lack of backbone. I do have to quietly admit to flipping through and reading the last couple of pages to find out how it ends. But I couldn't read a whole book about the Elizabeth/Ruth battles. I've got a whole stack of other rings/rays waiting for me, so that's part of it too, I think.

Anyway, thanks very much to moonforest for starting this ring! I'll try to get this mailed out soon.

I have to admit I was quite surprised by this book. I'm used to reading Gregory's historical fiction and this book was rather different. I suppose there were similar themes such as overbearing mother figures, the main character being surpressed and denied what they wanted. But this book was rather melodramatic which is ultimately defined by the ending (which came rather quickly compared which kind of ties in with the rest of the book).

Ruth's character did annoy me. Someone who works in the media industry is unlikely to be such a push over in their private life. There were so many points I just wanted to scream at her that Patrick was a selfish little shit and Elizabeth was a horrible, bitter old woman. I was rather hoping she would run off with her friend, David. I suppose that's why the ending rather disappointed me - she simply turns into Elizabeth.

Off to aussieQ8 when I get an address.

Edit 27/07/05: Sent to aussieQ8 via surface mail yesterday.

I cannot read this. I was so appaled by page 44 that I have just decided life is too short to be this annoyed by a paperback. I am so glad that I have read her other historical fictions b/c had this been my first of hers, I might never have read another thing she wrote. I will PM this origonal owner and get this on its way. Thanks!
