"Her name is Dinah. In the Bible, her life is only hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the more familiar chapters about her father, Jacob, and his dozen sons in the Book of Genesis.

Told in Dinah's voice, this novel reveals the traditions and turmoil of ancient womanhood--the world of the red tent."

The end came too soon. Every time I opened this book I stepped into a world of desert, cool water, love of mothers and sisters, and life and death. In a time when men were so powerful this book shows the power of women, strength, and the bonds of family. I enjoyed Dinah's character because while she was a victim of terrible circumstance she kept the strength and dignity of her mothers. A great book about love and triumph. Thanks for sharing this! Will send on to Suefitz next, Rubi-j has asked to be skipped.

What a beautiful story...I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, yet I can't put my finger on exactly why. Funny how that is. Maybe it's the pregnancy hormones, but I cried at the ending - a bit because of the ending, a bit because it was ending.
This book is now available ... I will PM jamesmum to see what should be done with the book now. Thanks for sharing - and thanks for getting the replacement copy. It was such a worthwhile read! Brew

I very much enjoyed this story - when I could remember not to compare it to scripture!

Mailed today, media mail, to rooshill - enjoy!

This book has not been rated.

I received this a couple of days ago but didn't journal it because I'm a big jerk :D and I've been on "computer restriction" at home!
I'll start reading as soon as I finish the ring book I already have. I'm glad to see from other JEs that this story seems to stand on it's own. If knowledge of the Bible was a prerequisite, I'd be lost - though it is on my TBR-someday list!

Journal Entry 22 by rooshill from Foresthill, California USA on Monday, November 27, 2006

This book has not been rated.

I haven't finished reading yet, but since I have the luxury of free computer time, here are some thoughts:

I now understand Atwood's 'The Handmaid's Tale' better - the Rachel centers and the handmaid's purpose of bearing on the wife's knees...but what a very different interpretation! (The idea here is much nicer in so many ways.)

This book comes at an interesting time for me since it deals with the concept of honoring and embracing our womanhood rather than viewing our monthly blood as a curse. I've been moving in that direction myself for the past year or so. (though I still can't quite welcome the cramps!) I mourn the passing of the red tent and all it represented.

I also have a bit of envy for Dinah - she had four mothers! My mother died when I was only six. I wish I had had a group such as Dinah's to guide me into womanhood.

Dinah's leaving for Egypt now and last night I cried for her.

Wow, what a story! Dinah is such an incredibly strong woman. I have much to say but don't want to post a bunch of spoilers! :)
I'll just say that this was a beautiful story with a satisfying ending.
Thank you for the opportunity to read it.
Mailing to AngelfireStar today.

Good book. It was easy to get into and a relatively short read for the length of it. It's not normally I book I would read but I really liked it. The end was moderately sad.

Will send on soon. Sorry for the delay.

I think this is one of the best books I've read so far this year. It's a book about women, about their strengh in a period where men held most of the power. It's also about the importance of family and oral traditions passing from one generation to the other.

I couldn't resist doing some online reseach about Dinah and she really is just a footnote in the Bible. Diamant gave her and the women of her tribe a wonderful dimention with this book.

22/06 - sent to Twynnie

This arrived today, along with another ring. Bookrings are like buses, I haven't had one for a while and then four turned up within the space of a few days! I shouldn't have any problem getting through them though, and I'm particularly looking forward to this one!.
Thanks to all those who have shared this book, it's nice to read something so well travelled!

Journal Entry 31 by Twynnie from Cambridge, Cambridgeshire United Kingdom on Sunday, July 08, 2007

This was one of the most enjoyable books I have read recently - although it did make me cry!

Dinah's character is so real and alive that her story is impossible to put down. The world of the red tent and of Jacob's wives is so vivid and seems for the most part so happy that it was almost unbearable for me when Dinah's part in it ended so suddenly. It was all so unnecessary!

The second part of the book had that sad sense of looking back that you so often get in historical novels whn time moves so fast that someone can go from being a child to an old woman in what seems like very few pages.

I have PMed meryl662001 and hopefully this will be on its way soon.

Update:I've PMed meryl662001 twice with no reply, so I'm trying an ISO on the forum. If I get no reply by next weekend I'll contact chas04 instead...
