As far as I can make out, James Schmitz is never given enough credit for his greatest accomplishment: writing in the 1950s stories that include women as competent human beings and equal partners. People are always going on about Heinlein's heroines: but his female space engineers still do the dishes. Schmitz treats women like regular people; he doesn't linger lovingly over their clothing or appearance; he doesn't put them into bunny slippers; he doesn't make them want babies; they just go about their business. For me, finding Schmitz was like seeing my first Siamese cat (a cat with blue eyes!), my first female bus driver, my first female police officer: YES, WE CAN!


This book reprints some of James Schmitz's excellent stories about a young xenotelepath. It includes the very first Telzey story, "Novice," which is also in "The Universe Against Her."
