Journal Entry 2 by Fluffy-Owl from Chichester, West Sussex United Kingdom on Saturday, June 4, 2005
Received in the post today from lucycat, have wanted to read this for a while so looking forward to reading it, hopefully the copious amount of annotation will enhance my enjoyment of the book rather than detract from it!

Journal Entry 3 by Fluffy-Owl from Chichester, West Sussex United Kingdom on Tuesday, August 23, 2005
Read this a while ago, didn't take too long as it's a short book, but very very moving. The ending is heartbreaking, but completely understandable, if that makes sense. Steinbeck is an absolutely brilliant writer, and I hope to read more by him soon.

Posted today to lauraloo29 in Canada as a BookRelay, hope it arrives safely and that it finds a nice new home.

Journal Entry 4 by winglauraloo29wing from Edmonton, Alberta Canada on Tuesday, August 30, 2005
Arrived today. Thank you!

Journal Entry 5 by winglauraloo29wing from Edmonton, Alberta Canada on Monday, February 12, 2007
I read this in high school. Still heartbreaking. I recently watched the movie version with John Malkovich and Gary Sinese. The movie was simplified. The book grittier.

I have not read any Steinbeck before so I started this with an open mind. As it is a short book I read it in one sitting. I found it to be a powerful piece of writing and I will defintely be looking for some more Steinbeck to read.

Have pmed next reader on the list.

Journal Entry 10 by stubee from Bury, Greater Manchester United Kingdom on Monday, June 25, 2007
This was waiting for me on my return from holiday.

Thanks beekeeper40 for passing this on and to lauraloo29 for adding me to the ring.

I'm a quarter of the way through my current reading but should get onto this one shortly.

Journal Entry 11 by stubee from Bury, Greater Manchester United Kingdom on Friday, July 13, 2007
I finished this yesterday, I had read this at school (that was a long time ago) and couldn't remember the story too well. It’s a short well written tragedy, very emotional and heartfelt, highly recommended – I’m glad that I took the time to re-read this again since school because as a teenager I wasn’t particularly interested in reading especially something that the curriculum required.

I’ve passed this onto KT-J to read, thanks again lauraloo29 for starting this ring!

Journal Entry 12 by KT-J on Friday, July 13, 2007
Received from Stubee. I've got another book to read before this but will hopefully get onto it shortly.

Journal Entry 13 by KT-J on Wednesday, July 18, 2007
I'd seen a play version of this so was interested to see how it compared to the book but the play was very faithful, I suppose because the book is so short.

This is a really good, well written story but so sad. A lovely tale of friendship, hope and ultimate tragedy.

Thanks lauraloo29 for sharing this. I've PMd ealasaidmae for their address so will be sending it on once I've received that.
Edit 23/07/2007: This was posted on Saturday 21st July.

Arrived today - thanks lauraloo and KT-J!

Journal Entry 15 by ealasaidmae from New Orleans, Louisiana USA on Wednesday, August 1, 2007
Most of the book is excellent. It''s exactly the right length and moves at exactly the right pace. The only problem I have with this is the parallel of the dog being shot. It''s always felt a little clumsy to me.

Mailed to smilingheron today

Journal Entry 17 by 2of3Rs from Hillsboro, Oregon USA on Thursday, August 9, 2007
...just received from ealasaidmae. Somehow I never read this in high school or college and I just recently read East of Eden and LOVED it. I''m looking forward to this...

Journal Entry 18 by 2of3Rs from Hillsboro, Oregon USA on Saturday, August 11, 2007
What a sad story. I thought it was sad even in the beginning, because of George and Lennie''s precarious circumstances. The ending made it that much sadder, though I agree with Fluffy-owl who said that the ending is heartbreaking but understandable.
Contacting silvia-pco to send it on to Portugal.

Journal Entry 19 by 2of3Rs from Hillsboro, Oregon USA on Tuesday, August 14, 2007

Journal Entry 20 by silvia-pco from Murtosa, Aveiro Portugal on Monday, August 20, 2007
... and it's here! Thanks!

22nd November - Unfortunately I couldn't read this book. I was keeping it for way too long so it is on its way to iliotropio.

Journal Entry 21 by iliotropio from Bruxelles / Brussel, Bruxelles / Brussel Belgium on Monday, November 26, 2007
Arrived safely in Brussels thanks to silvia-pco!

Journal Entry 22 by iliotropio from Bruxelles / Brussel, Bruxelles / Brussel Belgium on Tuesday, February 5, 2008
A poignant read. Highly recommended!
I've PMed mrsgaskell twice (on 22/1 and again on 31/1) but I haven't received a reply yet. I think I'll try to post an ISO in the forum.

Journal Entry 23 by iliotropio from Bruxelles / Brussel, Bruxelles / Brussel Belgium on Tuesday, February 12, 2008
I've finally managed to get mrsgaskell's address. The book is on its way to Canada.

Journal Entry 24 by wingrem_CJL-230711wing on Monday, February 25, 2008
Arrived safely today - thanks for sending it on iliotropio (& I like the postcard!).

I have a little catching up to do with a few other books but this is short so I won't be hanging on to it for too long.

Journal Entry 25 by wingrem_CJL-230711wing on Wednesday, March 12, 2008
I finished this and mailed it off to angela861 a few days ago but forgot to make my journal entry. I haven't read this before, in fact read Steinbeck for the first time just last year. What a fine writer he is! This short novel is beautifully written, poignant and terribly tragic - highly recommended.

Thanks for sharing!

Journal Entry 26 by angela861 from Chicago, Illinois USA on Tuesday, March 18, 2008
I received the book today in the mail. I will begin it soon. Thanks for the postcard, mrsgaskell!

Journal Entry 27 by angela861 from Chicago, Illinois USA on Tuesday, March 25, 2008
I started and finished this today. Wow... Steinbeck is a great writer. I've read 2 of his books this month and still can't believe how he sucks me into his stories. This was as others have said... heartbreaking (had to take a point off for that). Would highly recommend.

Waiting for cat207's address.

This book certainly has some history. I wonder if Davina still loves Paul. (doodles inside back cover)

A brilliant story of a tragic friendship.

This well-travelled book is heading back home to the UK - to London for the "Man" Book Swap.

Journal Entry 32 by Sunnybubble from Wallasey, Merseyside United Kingdom on Sunday, April 20, 2008
A well travelled ( and thin!) book that I've wanted to read for a long time, so was happy to steal in a live swap. Hope you enjoyed it Cat xxx

Journal Entry 33 by Sunnybubble from Wallasey, Merseyside United Kingdom on Monday, March 30, 2009
I loved this..the tragic ending was so inevitable yet I still had to read the page twice to check! Not sure how I'll get this moving again, but it will be soon!
