Picked this up at the used book store.
Finished on 3/18/05. I really enjoyed this book once I got to Part Two.
In part one I kept getting confused who the students were because the teacher, Jane Hudson, had given them classical names. The author would alternate between the two names, sometimes in the same sentence or the next. Athena is feeling blue. I hope Ellen doesn't attempt suicide. Aghhhh!
I also feel that I was the Latin student, too much!!!
Overall, the story was very well done. I could visualize the lake and the dorms, the moldy smelly teacher...
Great ending, couldn't put the book down.
I am starting a bookray to share this book with those who have it on their wishlist.

This book arrived in the mail today. I hope to read it soon. I need to finish one book for another ring.

Journal Entry 4 by momofap from Sheldon, Iowa USA on Tuesday, April 5, 2005
I enjoyed reading this mystery/thriller. The dark tone of this story seemed to intrigue me. This dark of a book is not my usual type of reading, but it was a great change of pace. I did not connect the puzzle pieces until the author gave me lots of hints. I found the book to be a real pageturner. I am glad I had the chance to read this book.

As soon as I have a mailing address for the next person, I will send this book on.

I just received and read this book. It was very well written - I rated it a little lower than I planned to because the ending seemed fairly easy to figure out.

Great book - it brought back memories of taking latin in middle school!

Sorry for the delay - somehow brake fluid got on the envelope and it had to be left in the car during the last trip to the post office. I will send it out this week (May 28)

I just started this book and the gothic feel to it gives this book an eerie thrill. I hope that the rest of the book doesn't disappoint.

I enjoyed this suspenseful book. I did figure out who was the murderer prior to the main character. I will ship it out tomorrow

Received in the mail today. I am in the middle of two other books right now so I will start it by the weekend. I am a slow reader...I'll let you know what I think...hopefully quickly!!! THANKS!

Quick Note: 7/20 I have about 100 pages left...to be finished by next week!!

Journal Entry 11 by AMarie from Omaha, Nebraska USA on Thursday, July 28, 2005
I'd like to apologize for having this sooo long! I finally finished about 10 minutes ago...whew.

This was my first book by Goodman, I have to say it was pretty good. This book should be read within a few days from starting it though. I was in the middle of a few books (Prep for one-another private school book) and this book has enough characters past and present to get you confused. Throw in the other private school book I was reading and you have yourself a mess! So, read this and keep all the characters straight! I did not know "who" the mystery was all about. I was wrong...but I seem to always be wrong in a "who did it" book. I think one of my favorite parts of this book was the freezing of the lake. The girls going out to watch the freeze is so interesting...I love it when I learn something from a book...as stupid as this might seem!

Thanks for sharing this story with me!!! It's now on to GWENDY!

this was a serious page turner for me. i kept wondering what else could possibly be revealed, and then there was more! i loved the bits of latin that were woven into the story and the wild relationships of the girls. when i was finished my mom picked it up and i had to pry it out of her hands to mail it on to the next.

well, to risk repeating the praise that has already been bestowed upon this book, I too found its reading quite enjoyable. I thought that Goodman weaved a few aluring threads into this tangled tale, and while many of them were rather easy to unweave (I found it simple to discern the killer, for instance, long before it was revealed to the characters), I think the authors captivating and picturesque style kept me absorbed in the well-tensioned plot. The transitions and similarities of the tragedies between not only the current-day characters and their pasts, but also between their stories and those of the Latin/Greek literature, were perfect in their timing and execution. I will certainly look for others by this author.

And, since I was able to enjoy it thanks to the generosity of others, I will happily send it along to Guinneth who is anxious to finally get to read this tale as well....Happy Reading!
Sorry for the long delay; its on its way now!

Oh dear - this book arrived two days ago and I completely forgot to journal it! I'm halfway through it already (thanks to my husband's business trip, and the fact that it's nearly impossible to put down.)

Journal Entry 17 by Guinneth from Manchester, New Hampshire USA on Saturday, October 8, 2005
This book is a real page turner, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's interesting to me that at the beginning of the story I did not like Jane at all, and by the end I found her completely sympathetic. She wasn't at all who I thought she was, which is a central theme of the novel. Like other readers, I found Part 1 almost awkward in its execution...but I think the author did that on purpose. What I found most compelling was not the modern day "whodunnit", but rather what exactly happened twenty years ago and why. There were many layers to the answers to those questions, and also to the characters. (Including the lake, which is almost another character in itself.) I love when, as in life, nothing is necessarily as it seems. This isn't a simple mystery at all; it's about love, loss, feeling displaced, living with the past, guilt, motherhood...I could go on and on, obviously. :)

Without giving away too much, I found the image of Matt and Lucy's final moments truly haunting. I loved the use of the process of the lake freezing over as a framework for the narrative. How spooky were all those descriptions of groaning, cracking ice, ground fog in the snowy woods, and paths that became more and more closed in as Winter wore on? I found this quote from one of the reviewers on the book jacket to be particularly apt: "A book that needs the roar of a fire to ward off its psychic chill." -The Denver Post.

This was well worth the wait for me! Thanks so much for sharing this one, Sissyrun, and a special thank you to Maurean for rounding up us refugees from another dufunct ring for this book. I look forward to more from Carol Goodman.
