Elizabeth I has acceded to the throne of England, a position she has waited and schemed for all her life. She is surrounded by advisers, all convinced that they know what would be best for the country and certain that a young woman cannot form political judgements. Elizabeth feels that she can rely on just one man: her oldest friend, a married man, Robert Dudley. It is soon plain that he is more than merely a friend.

Received for my BCUK NSSEB from the wonderful caro1. This came in a big box, beautifully wrapped in yellow tissue paper, along with A Sunday at the Pool in Kigali (another wishlist book), a Thorntons Easter egg, some chocolate mini eggs, two fluffy yellow chickies, an Easter cookie, a Lush bath bomb bunny, a card and an Easter cake. Really lovely - thank you!

It will be a while before I read this, so I lent it to my mum, poppysnoz.
Passed to me by Dododumpling who certianly knows the kind of books I like to read. Philippa Gregory has again whetted my appetite with the life of Elizabeth. Is it a romance or is it an historical novel. Who cares, it made for excellent reading.

I love Philippa Gregory's historical novels, and this one was no exception. Elizabeth comes across as capricious and in love ... Robert as ambitious but I'm not sure he was in love with Elizabeth, more with the power her love conferred on him. Either way, Amy's story is tragic.
Early in the book, Hannah Green, The Queen's Fool is mentioned, which was a nice link to another of Gregory's works. I'll be adding her new book, The Boleyn Inheritance, to my wishlist.
