Hidden in the heart of the old city of Barcelona is the 'Cemetery of Forgotten Books', a labyrinthine library of obscure and forgotten titles. To this library, a man brings his ten year old son, Daniel, one cold morning in 1945. Daniel is allowed to choose one book and from the dusty shelves pulls The Shadow of the Wind by Julian Carax. But as Daniel grows up, several people seem inordinately interested in his find. What begins as a case of literary curiosity turns into a race to find out the truth behind the life and death of Julian Carax and to save those he left behind. (Taken from the blurb).
I'm going to offer this as a book ring as I've enjoyed it so much. It's not just the story of the book and its author, but of the city itself, and the unsettled period Daniel lives through. Totally engaging.

Whee!!! This has come at just the right time. I'm about to finish a book and will be spending some of the next two days hanging round waiting rooms while younger daughter gets her toe fixed.
I loved this book from start to finish and hope one day to read it in the original Spanish. It manages to combine poetic lyricism with thriller elements. It is also wonderfully evocative of Barcelona, my favourite city. Thank you niccijl for sharing.
I will send on to robert-walker, hopefully by Saturday if I get the address, otherwise it will have to be after I come back from holiday on April 18.

Stunning, breathtaking, there just isn't enough superlatives to describe the enjoyment i got from this book. It was amazing from the first page to the last. Once in a while a rare book comes along that the more you read, the more you don't want the book to end, for me this was such a book.
Without giving any of the story line away i first thought it a little corny how Daniels life seemed to mirror that of Julians, but later you realise that this twist is intrinsic to the theme of the book. I would have also liked to have known a little more about Fermin Romero de Torres, what a fascinating character he turned out to be.
This is one of my all time favourite reads, i must now buy a copy of this book for my own collection, it is a book i will read and re-read again and again.
Thank you niccijl for sharing this book with us.

When I started reading this book, it pulled me right in. I was enjoying it very much, but about page 100 or so my real life just got nuts and I haven't been able to get back into the book since.
Rather than hold it up any longer, I mailed it on to the next person today, without finishing it. Sorry for the delay everyone.

I loved this book. The lyricism of the phrases and the descriptive sentencing is what makes this book literature. I loved the story and how real life parallels the story within. The author wrote a fantstic story but equally must be applauded is the translator for a superlative job

Thanks! I will try to get to this soon as I do have some rings ahead of this.
Finally finished this amazing book today! WOOT!!! Good, but a bit long and the plot is somewhat more roundabout than I would prefer, but it wasn't confusing. I kept having to put it down to do something (like work) and while it was engaging when I was reading, it seemed difficult for me to go back to and pick up again, which helped with all delay.
Nancydotslash asked to be skipped, so I am sending this home. :)
**Packed today 5/31.
