[I found another copy of this, and couldn't resist getting it; not only can I cut and paste my previous journal entry, but I can revive a stalled bookring!]

This is an absolutely hilarious collection of (sort of) movie reviews, but with a twist. Somewhat in the fashion of Mystery Science Theater 3000, the author and several of his friends gather 'round the VCR (later upgraded to DVD for the benefit of the bonus tracks on "Coyote Ugly") and lambaste the film of the week. The charm of it all, though, has more to do with the personal lives of the review team; it's not clear to me how much (if any) of the details are true, but all I could think while reading was that I'd like to go to their place and watch movies with them. [Or start up a themed move-dissecting party myself... Hmmmm!] The characters banter, complain about their jobs or their love lives - in one case, a screening-party member actually breaks up with his boyfriend over "Basic Instinct" - and sometimes discuss the films. (There's a field trip to an actual movie theater near the end of the book; it's full of lively incidents, and the Skittles affair alone had me laughing out loud.) I recommend this one if you enjoy popular culture and the trashing thereof.

Screening Party is on its way to BCer Starry-Starry in Wales, to complete the bookray that began with this copy some time ago. (I sent the book by economy letter post - aka "cheap and slow" {grin} - but I hope it will arrive sooner than the maximum 4-to-6-weeks!)

It's arrived! Can't believe it was so quick. Thanks very much GoryDetails, looking forward to reading it.

22nd June 2005
I can't remember the last time it took me so long to read an enjoyable book - it is deceptively long due to its magazine like format, though without the pictures. It was a lot of fun though and it made me laugh out loud in several places - I especially loved all the bitchy comments.

I didn't much care for the films they chose though, films with a lot of graphic sex in them do nothing for me so I hadn't watched any of those, and half the fun was remembering all the daft scenes along with them. Also some of the American pop culture comments went way over my head. Nevertheless it is a great idea for a book and I'd love to read a follow up.

Thanks for giving me the chance to read it Gorydetails, I'll be taking it with me to the Unconvention in July as promised.

As I didn't manage to make it to the Unconvention, I offered this on the BCUK yahoo group and now it is off on a very mini-ray.

This arrived today, and I've already read the entry for 'Jaws'. They're so mean about Richard Dreyfuss and his unsightly facial hair, but I'm with them on Scheider. :o)

I'm looking forward to reading the rest of these 'reviews', although I think I might have to rent a couple of films to appreciate the book fully.

Journal Entry 6 by flajol from Carterton, Wairarapa New Zealand on Thursday, January 5, 2006
Funny and supremely bitchy! I haven't seen all the films they discuss, but enjoyed going over old ground on the ones I have seen. I can't say I agreed with them on everything, but that's half the fun. :o)

Off to Pookledo tomorrow morning. Sorry about the delay in sending this on - it seems to have taken ages for me get through.

Many thanks Sarah! I've wanted to read this book ever since N8an waxed lyrical about it! Thank you for sharing!

OK, so I'm only halfway through the book, but this is unfair! I can't read because of the tears in my eyes at the way our heroes are dissecting Flashdance! I have been laughing out loud (and occasionally snorting - which isn't terribly attractive) at the bitchy-witchy barbs released by Dennis and Friends and SO want to be there.....OK, so they may have no idea about the wives of Henry VIII (Jane Seymour was not beheaded, she beat her loving hubby to the chop by popping her clogs while expelling the future Edward VI) but they have wicked minds and tongues to match. And has anyone else looked at Dennis Hensley's website to discover what a Filthy Sanchez is, or is that just me?

Journal Entry 12 by Flambard from Horsham, West Sussex United Kingdom on Tuesday, July 10, 2007
Hilarious! Are these guys real? I concede that Dennis must be real from the evidence of his photos (cheesy included!), but the others are just too perfect. Aren't they? The blizzard of quick-fire wisecracks and comments may be far too USA-centric for those of us who have not been subjected to years (and years and years) of Fox to understand them all, but those which filtered through are real doozies!

My top 3:
3. Cruising..... all of it!
2. Glitter: The words put into Mariah Carey's mouth when returning to her backing-singers' apartment.
1. A Star Is Born: Barbra Streisand's eyes..... (I wept and hooted. Mind you I think it was partly the relief that Tony was finally de-Tad'd and back to his razor-sharp self.)

This arrived in a parcel via England today and I am taking it as a Valentine's Day gift coming as it does from one dear friend via another. Aint the world wonderful ?

It looks like it will be a lot of fun to read !

Journal Entry 15 by ottawabill from Ottawa, Ontario Canada on Saturday, March 1, 2008
Oh my gawsh...this is a scream. I love their reviews of the films and the lines they crack off one another. The dialog is witty and saucy and bitchy and campy and just the kind of stuff my friends and I say when we get together to dish a movie or a special on TV.

I wish I'd had my Oscars party this year as this would have been a perfect place to pass this along. It is such fun I am reluctant to wild release it anywhere and will seek a themed release for it unless I get a request.
