"Deja Dead" is the first novel in the Temperance "Tempe" Brennan mystery series. I've read a couple of the books out of sequence, and decided it was time to put an end to that as they really should be read in series order for full enjoyment .
This is an expertly crafted, immaculately researched novel that had me up till dawn because I couldn’t put it down.
Tempe Brennan is a forensic pathologist from the States who is working in Montreal. She's a flawed character (ex-alcoholic, divorced), but that makes her more real and easy to relate to. She's never quite become used to cutting up the dead, still a little squeamish, and a very believable characater (probably because Reichs herself does the same kind of work). We understand and we cringe when she describes Tempe's reactions when she's on the job.
This is an engrossing, character driven story that sucks you right in. I was as frustrated as Tempe when the French Canadian cops wouldn't believe her about there being a serial killer. I felt Tempe's fear when she was afraid, though I must admit she was a little reckless at times, and I sympathized when others doubted her.
I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the Tempe Brennan books I've read and highly recommend them. This is no exception.

Arrived today. I'll try to get this book to the book doctor to put its cover back while it languishes on Mt. TBR...
Hmmm ... cover was on it when I mailed. Must have jumped off when opened. I NEVER mail out books without their covers.
This poor book does NOT want to be covered. I've had to glue it on twice, and I'm using glue that says it's for this sort of thing. Archival quality, too.
There's been a TV show based on this series, Bones, although looking at the website, only lead character Temperance Brennan is the same.
I think if I hadn't looked at the website, I wouldn't be in any rush to read more of the series. It was ... fine. That's all. Nothing special. It didn't connect with me the way other series have.
But now, I need to know when the cast changes. I've got Death Du Jour here and waiting for me; I'll see what happens there.
