2005 Book #5: The Ginger Tree by Oswald Wynd I really really enjoyed this book. I've always had an interest in eastern cultures and way of life and this book takes place in China and Japan. The book is written in a diary format beginning in 1903 when a Scotswoman takes a boat from europe to meet her English husband-to-be in China where he is posted. It ends in late 1942. In between those two dates so much happens to this girl and it was great to see her progress from a totally naive country girl to a grown woman with eyes wide open and worldly who understands what it means to be in a place where she never fits in. She really learns to understand who she is and to be comfortable in her own skin. Considering how innocent she was in the beginning, I was always surprised by some of the things she did. However, they weren't things that were so outlandish that it wasn't believeable for her character. The author is a Scot born in Japan, so this is probably why I felt the story and the writing was so authentic. I've read from the back of the book and on the internet that this story was made into a Masterpiece Theatre miniseries, so I might try and find a copy of that and see how it compares to the book. I really recommend this book!
