Albert Camus
“The Stranger”

“The Stranger” by Albert Camus is an Absurd and tragic novel. When finished with reading this book one can then be able to comprehend the true and deepest feelings of alienation. The story takes place in the French colonial areas of Algeria. The main character Meursault mother dies, and he travels to Algeria for her funeral. When Meursault is told that his mother had died he becomes a walking dead person without a care in the world. He doesn’t even cry on the day of his mother’s funeral. It’s hard to believe that his lack of tears will cost him his life later on as well. After the funeral Meursault goes to the beach with some of his friends, unfortunately one of his friend’s enemies is also at the beach and they get into a bloody fight. Meursault in order it save his friend kills his friend’s enemy. After this incident Meursault is tried at court and is supposed to face the death sentence, not because he murdered someone but because the judge and the jury heard that Meursault didn’t cry on his mother’s funeral. At this point in the story one gets frustrated and filled with anger knowing that Meursault will be facing the death sentence because of something so absurd and irreverent to the subject. The thing that is the most frustrating is knowing that Meursault doesn’t even care whether he will live or die, this injustice just puts a black cherry on top of it all. I wouldn’t recommend this book for people that like happy endings and sweet pie.
