I just loved this book! I know some readers had issues w/ the sick friend and feeling it's been overdone. I just found this part very, very touching and well done. The characters were unique and I loved the Alabama/Georgia backdrop. Thanks so much for sharing this book! Sending off to Secretariat 04/04.

RELEASE NOTES:

Cassandra King wrote this book through the narration of three of the six "Same Sweet Girls." I found each of the narrators to be multi-dimensional, and each was definitely flawed. Of the three, Julia was my favorite. She seemed the least self-destructive and most level-headed, yet still a flawed individual.

My strongest criticism of the book is that we did not get narration from the remaining three girls. It was especially annoying that Astor, who is clearly intended as the "bad seed" here was only two dimensional because everything we knew about her was from the eyes of the others. Although I would tend to agree with Corrinne's assessment of Astor, I wanted to make than determination for myself. Byrd and Rosenelle were barely mentioned and were, frankly, one-dimensional as a result. I got no real sense of them.

I recognize that perhaps King or the publisher thought 6 voices would be too many, but you don't have to give equal weight to each, like was done in Poisonwood Bible. Even 2 or 3 quick narrations from Byrd and Rosenelle would have made them real. For me, this is one of those books which sounded better from the flyleaf than it actually read.

On its way to Canada today!
