9 out of 10

"A microscopic black hole has accidentally fallen into the Earth's core, threatening to destroy the planet within two years. Some scientists are frantically searching for ways to prevent the distaster. But others argue that the only way to save the Earth is to let its human inhabitants become extinct..."

I quite enjoyed this book, particularly for its speculation on the nature of gravity, black holes, and, of course, artifical intelligence. Though written in 1990, I think Brin was rather prescient with the feel of the "news articles" he sprinkles around the chapter breaks for flavor.
