Besides Pride and Prejudice, I liked Sense and Sensiblity best so far. My heart went out to Marianne and even more so to Elinor in their grief. It is typically for Jane Austen to rather dwell on the reasons for their different actions and moral musings than a constellation that could otherwise be a great comedy. Their mortification and struggels are not laid open to laughter.Austens characters (Elinor, even Marianne, but not Lucy)are too honorable and sometimes too polite to take revenge or to state their true feelings. They are bound by duty, dependence and the moral values of their time. While that sounds rather depressing it is really a beautiful read. I will send it right on to MPD. |
