I got from a conversation at one of our BXer gatherings Flyinfox and choclaholic that they'd read some of Steve Martin's writing and were a little surprised he had books out and so on. On reconsideration, though, he certainly did a lot of writing for his movies and his comedy back in the day of Saturday Night Live on t.v. One day I was strolling around the store Half Price Books (ha! I really shouldn't have been!) and I saw this book and decided to give it a try. I don't usually like short stories, but I've always loved Steve Martin's comedy so I figured a quite thin book by him at a low low price wasn't putting me out much. Good thing, too, because I was reading the shorts in this book and at the end of it I'd end up thinking "what did I just read?" It's just a lot of, well.... drivel! Apparently there's one short story in here that's supposed to have been the launch point for another of his books, "Shop Girl," which was also made into a movie. I don't know which it would be. Perhaps it was one I didn't get to. Yes, I usually hate to do it and rarely do, but I picked up a book that despite being a mere 113pp, I just could not finish it. I think I got to p.70 and quit. I just couldn't continue reading so much pointless randomness and regretted having used the time to read that far. Perhaps some of his other books are better than this, but I haven't found out. synergy |
