I had trouble tracking down the ISBN for this edition. There is no number printed on the book although it was published in 1977. The internet is a wonderful thing...I tracked it down through the publisher. It is a "book club edition" which may have some bearing on the missing isbn.

It was bought new from Mary Ryan's in Brisbane CBD in the 1980's its a hardback with dustjacket in good condition.

The subject of John Barrymore is a deep one. A genius bent on self destruction hence the title 'damned in paradise'

This book had been sitting on my bookshelf for several decades as it was published in 1977 and I bought it new. It was high time it was read.

It took a little while to get to the actual subject of this bio but understanding his theatrical family roots was important to building a picture of the man.

It's a very good biography written long enough after the passing of the iconic John Barrymore to be able to be candid regarding his self destructive life alongside his acting brilliance.

It is a tragedy that he chose to squander his amazing talent by drinking himself to death. The last 20 years of his life he was constantly drunk but still managed to deliver exceptional performances on stage and screen. One can only imaging what he could have done if sober.

A hardback book requires the right time and place to read. It took a while.

I really enjoyed this book. I agree with all of Pixette's comments. It is not celebrity fluff but a highly researched biography. (Do people write diaries or keep letters any more?) In addition, it provides quite a social history of stage and screen over a long period.
