State of Fear
12 journalers for this copy...
"This is Crichton's most wide-ranging thriller. State of Fear takes the reader from the glaciers of Iceland to the volcanoes of Antarctica, from the Arizona desert to the deadly jungles of the Solomon Islands, from the streets of Paris to the beaches of Los Angeles. The novel races forward on a roller-coaster thrill ride, all the while keeping the brain in high gear. Gripping and thought-provoking, State of Fear is Michael Crichton ay his very best."

caught it yesterday!!!! wee-hoo! i love michael crichton......
excellent as always - tho i finished it about 4 days after i got it, my life erupted in chaos soon after and the poor sad lonely book sat on my desk waiting to be sent to its new person. Well its on its way...sorry all for the delay. Worth the wait??? ugh.... sent on to FortyToo in NJ on Tuesday.....
Interesting to think about - especially lately with the Kyoto treaty and folks debating whether global warming does exist. Crichton does a great job of playing devil's advocate. Makes me doubt everything i've ever believed concerning climate change.....
Arrived safe and sound today. Can't wait to get started!
This book was great! The science was interesting, as were the ideas Crichton presents. Great pacing--what a page turner! Not one for the faint of heart, but definitely entertaining.
Thanks for sharing this one, Wiley90! I've PM'ed the next person and will send it out when I hear back from them.

Mailed off to RockDg in Australia today. It's a fairly hefty book, so I sent it surface mail--I hope that is gets there more quickly than the stated 4-6 weeks.
Received a rather large package in my little letter-box today ... opened it up ... it's a Crichton!!! This will go next in-line on TBR. So I should start it soon, and, being a Crichton, should finish it not long after.
i enjoyed this. as always crichton did go into the science of it very often which isn't that great for moving the plot along. makes me wonder how much of it is true - i know crichton is great at verisimilitude, even when it's not based in reality at all - but i think this one kind of was. i'll have to research the topic and find out for myself.
and without all those appendices and references it'd be a lot cheaper to post OS :D
posted off to doris in quebec today!

I received this book yesterday. I have another bookray in front of it, but should be able to start it within the next week. I've been looking forward to it for a while, although I've heard mixed reviews.

Soon after I signed up for this bookring my boss read this book (or listened to it) and didn't care for it. I guess I'd been dreading a little for the last 8 months that I wouldn't care for it either.
It started out slow and seemed to be lighter on action than I am used to with a Crichton book. However, I'd love to read the last section again. His concept of our state of fear and the reasons for it are very interesting.
As kimberwolf mentioned, I have become a lot more skeptical of global warming since I read this book, I've even cringed while watching Hurricane Rita track towards Texas as weatherfolks talk about stronger hurricanes due to global warming. I'd known some of the facts before, but a friend from high school who I respect actually worked on global warming as part of his PhD, and I proposed then that for all we know the ozone hole could be a natural cyclic thing. It would be interesting to talk to him again.
This wasn't Crichton's best book ever, but I'm glad that I read it. Thank you very much for sharing Wiley90.

Thanks for sharing Wiley90!
I just finished the book last night, and today I'm tired b/c I stayed up too late, just couldn't put it down for the last several chapters! I too thought it started off kinda slow, introducing too many different characters/settings, which then were barely mentioned in passing at another point in the book. But it got much better which made up for it. Interesting take on global warming, or the lack thereof it.
Will try to mail tonight or this weekend to vicki9170

Although I gave this book to my husband and read my own copy of this book I decided to copy the journal entry I made to this book as well.
This book was not at all what I expected. It's fiction based on fact. A very interesting subject, 'political aspects/consequences of' global warming. I have recently seen the movie 'An inconvenient truth' which is quite opposite in it's opinion of global warming to the opinion of this book. As a result I don't know what to believe anymore, which I find quite disturbing. Anyway I loved the fictional part of the book, fastpaced as usual.
This book sure stirs up new discussions about global warming (I hope) and everyone should read it!
P.S. One page of the book was getting loose and I tried to glue it back. I hope it sticks.
