I got this book from the S.A. library's "The Book Cellar" probably ages ago since it has the library number stickers on it and "withdrawn" stamps on it. I didn't realize until just now that I'd not registered it. I finished reading it a few weeks ago and I'll be writing a review for it soon.

2005 Book #1: The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin I actually started reading this book in 2004 around the last week or so, but I wasn't able to finish it before the end of the year. I kept putting it down and finding something else to do... I've often heard about this book being one of those books that science fiction fans should read as classic sci-fi, so when I came across a copy I picked it up for that reason. The back of the book gave only reviews, no synopsis. So the main idea of the story is about the main character being an alien sent to a world that is currently in an ice age, but which has sentient advanced beings that he's been sent in to recruit for a "federation of planets," to steal a phrase from the Star Trek universe. The story revolves around that and the things that happen to him as he tries to convince unbelieving masses that he's an alien (even though he's sufficiently similar to them to not really appear so) and all the things pulled on him thanks to politicians vying for power. I'd say that probably at the time that this came out (copyright 1969 by Le Guin), it was a plot that hadn't been explored much. But as I mentioned, this type of "close encounter" has been hit upon many times since then in this very format, those of which I'm most familiar being Star Trek's movie "First Contact" or any of a number of ST:TOS and ST:TNG t.v. episodes. It still can be a very interesting hypothetical to wonder what sentients would do when faced with others who are not from their planet for the first time and who have zero common background from biology to culture. Unfortunately I didn't feel this book covered much that I'd not encountered before in other books, t.v., or movies. However, the people, their customs/language/etc., and their entire world was very well imagined and I have to give props to that. synergy
