This book is about 2 couples whose lives overlap in California: an American and an illegal Mexican couple.

In July 1997, I spent one month in California, working in an organic farm close to Half Moon Bay, just 1 hour South of San Francisco. I was there as part of my engineering training: in France, before you become a boss, one wants you to spend 1 month as a basic worker. Indeed, my co-workers were all Mexican, most of them illegal, working 9 hours a day, 6 days a week in the farm, leaning over to pick up strawberries or to re-pack basil and other herbs.
By then, I was struck by the fact that the kids had no other ambition than to do the same as their parents. They did not care learning English, because they could manage with Spanish as long as they remained within the community. They were happy to send money to their families back in Mexico.
Then, from 1999 to 2001, I lived in Mexico (2 years in Puebla). Back then we paid people 5 dollars a day. They were all dreaming about going over to Los Estados Unidos. I remember flying often from Mexico to Atlanta, I remember the people coming out of the plane with their big hats, so happy to land in the US. I am French, I am white, I was never bothered by Immigration, lucky me, lost among the "Hispanics".

All this explains why I was so overwhelmed by this book.
I can only hope more people would read that book, especially those living there, in California, or anywhere in the world where people with such different living conditions are neighbours and yet, don't have the faintest ideas what the poor endure.

Got it !!!

Edifiants.

Just like you said penelopita, this proved to be an overwhelming read!
And I wasn't bothered by Boyle's style, although I had to struggle to understand certain sentences or paragraphs, I thought it was brilliant, especially after having read too many Paul Auster's!
The reading really made me feel sick, and I don't know if this added to my poor reading-speed. Knowing that this is not just "history" but going on now, almost before our very eyes... it scares me to see how low we have reached.

I would recommend this read to anyone (to me it ranges in the same category as The Constant Gardener, by John Le carré), and will probably not hesitate to get my own copy.

I haven't read the press articles added by Seg0, but made sure to photocopy them before forwarding the book to decay (mailed last Thursday, Dec.15).

Thanks again, girls!

Journal Entry 12 by Brujula from Valenciennes, Nord-Pas-de-Calais France on Sunday, February 11, 2007
Overwhelming is a good adjective for this book.
It is about incredible bad luck, despair, misery...
Every time the protagonists have a tiny little bit of hope, something bad happens, and they fall even lower and deeper.
It's as is they were floating in a pool and every time they get their head out of the water a huge hand ducks them in the water again!

A very well written book, though, but its so... disheartening? (descorazonador....) that you have to take some time to read it, I just couldn't read it in one go!

Thank you very much for this ring penelopita!
Can you tell me your adress so I mail it back?

Et ça me gêne.
