Arrived in the mail last night with two other books - thanks booklady331!

Journal Entry 4 by dancing-dog from Cordova, Tennessee USA on Thursday, March 24, 2005
A fun book, easy to start, put down a while and resume reading since each chapter is a separate summer's adventure of Joey & Mary Alice during 1929 - 1935. I found myself a little surprised at first by their grandmother's "whoopers". I was almost disappointed that they quit visiting their Grandmother after 1935.

Will send it on it's way after I finish Walk Two Moons.

I LOVED this book. I enjoyed it in the same way I liked "The Watsons Go To Birmingham", but moreso, I guess because I could relate to the bond between the children and their grandmother. It was a funny book, touching and honest. I'll get to the other book that goes with this ring hopefully soon.

Received today with Walk Two Moons as part of the Newbery book rings. Interesting--the package had been opened and inspected by US customs border patrol. That's the first time that's happened to a book I've received!

This was a great book. I enjoyed Joey and Mary Alice's adentures with their Grandma and it was funny to see how much like her Mary Alice became! This was a very prickly Grandma with a heart of gold. I think my favorite story was the year of the one-woman crime wave! Grandma stealing, poaching, and feeding the hungry drifters. It was great when she told the sheriff--they are out of the city--there's the line. Then when he threatened her--go ahead, take me in, but you've talked so long the evidence has been eaten. Close second favorite was the year of the rummage sale and the bogus Lincoln items.

I'll send this out tomorrow to yokaye.

I liked the format of this book, with the yearly summer adventures. My favorite adventure was also the one - woman crime wave. =) It has realistic, touching moments that hint at the dark times of the era, but the crochety old grandma lightened the story with her hilarious antics.

Send today to spacedog. Enjoy!

i enjoyed this. the whole setup was in danger of being very cliche, but there were enough surprises w/ this prickly backwoods grandma and her two grandchildren that it kept my attention, although i wasn't overwhelmed by it. my favorite quote was: "never trust an ugly woman. she's got a grudge against the world." will return to the first person after i finish the other book.

i just found out that there's a sequel, A Year Down Yonder, that won the 2001 newbery award. it'll be fun to read more about grandma dowdel and mary alice.
