This book was my first taste of the work of Jostein Gaarder and it was very different than I expected it to be. It is basically the story of a young girl, Sophie, who pretty much learns the history of philosophy and its major theories which leads her to a new discovery about herself.

While philosophy fascinates me, I have to admit that I was disappointed by this book as I did not realise until I started reading it that it is basically a beginner's textbook to philosophy, moreso than a story in itself. I guess it makes it a fun way of learning the basics of philosophy, moreso than a textbook, but if I had known this was basically a textbook with a bit of a story thrown in I might not have bothered with it in the first place.

Picked this up at the London Meet Up last night..... Sorry i didnt get chance to say hello redjanet. Will get to this one as soon as i can....

UPDATE: I've had to have a major sort out of Mount Toobie :o( and i'm now on a self inflicted ban of picking up any more books at meets (unless they're for wild releasing) so unfortunately this one is going to become a victim of the cull :o(
