The New Yorker, John Burnham Schwartz writes... "There is a particular pleasure to be found in reading a novel that is sui generis and yet is imbued with subtle shadings of its literary predecessors: this is a high-wire act. To protect himself against falling, the author has brought to his task a prodigious trove of research ... and an uncanny degree of empathy for ... a woman usually regarded in the West as either caricature or museum piece.... Rarely has a world so closed and foreign been evoked with such natural assurance."

I really enjoyed this book. It was very well-written; at times I forgot it was not about a real person. The historical detail was well-researched, especially her training. I am mailing this book to AmyMS88 today.

Journal Entry 8 by AmyMS88 from Dallas, Texas USA on Monday, March 14, 2005
I thought this was a very well researched book. I enjoyed it. I have a couple of comments, and I will write them in white so someone won't accidentally see them. Just highlight the area below if you're interested! I thought it was sad that Sayuri threw away Nobu's affection and friendship for just the dream of the Chairman. Yes, it did end up working out okay for her, but I was hoping that she would realize that she did care about Nobu, despite his deformity. Considering that she thought the Chairman wasn't even interested in her. Nobu obviously cared. That was the one disappointment I had with the book; I thought it would have been much more powerful if she hadn't got what she thought she always wanted but found that Nobu was better than she could have imagined. I thought at one point during the war that she was going to figure it out. I was happy that it worked out for them, but still a little sad at what she lost. Oh well, it didn't ruin the book or make it any less enjoyable for me... Thanks for sharing this, I will be sending it to Barker-tx tomorrow!

Beautifully written. The language is beautiful. I had to remind myself that this was a novel and not real. It is off to Marilee on Tuesday, July 5th. Enjoy.
