Mass-market paperback from the free book bank run by New Haven Reads. I love Jennifer Crusie--her books never disappoint--and this was yet another smart, funny read. Read more (including Min's recipe for Chicken Marsala) at jennycrusie.com.

From Publishers Weekly
Minerva Dobbs is an overweight, over-cautious woman in her 30s, but when she hears her ex-boyfriend bet handsome Calvin Morrisey that he can't get Min into bed within a month, she decides to give both men a taste of their own medicine. Inevitably, Min hits a stumbling block when she finds herself falling hard for Cal, who lures her with rich food and mind-boggling kisses. Cal, in turn, can't resist the lush, sexy Min. Their road is not an easy one, and they have to consume massive quantities of chicken marsala and Krispy Kremes—some might argue too many of each—before they reach their happy ending.

From Booklist
Minerva Dobbs thought David Fisk might be the one she's been waiting for, until he dumps her three weeks before her sister Diana's wedding. Min soon realizes just how lucky she is to be rid of David when she overhears him at her favorite bar betting a handsome stranger, Calvin Morrisey, that Cal couldn't bed Min in a month. At first Min debates the idea of giving them both a piece of her mind, but then she remembers she still needs a date for the wedding. Why not use the all-too charming Cal just like he was going to use her, and then dump him? Of course, Min never expected that Cal might turn out to be "the one." A sturdy statistician who thinks Elvis Presley is the only man worth waiting for discovers that fairy tales can come true if you are only willing to believe. New York Times best-selling Crusie maintains her winning streak in another wickedly witty, deliciously sexy contemporary romance. Finding exactly the right balance between cynicism and optimism, Crusie deftly blends snappy dialogue; quirky, irrepressible secondary characters; and two beautifully matched protagonists struggling against their romantic fate.

This was a "cute" read. I loved how Min and Cal's relationship was growing. It was priceless. But Cynthie, on the other hand, was driving me absolutely crazy with all her pshych talk about relationships. Arghhh...
Thank you, editorgrrl for sharing this book. :)

This book got me rolling on the floor laughing. Well, at times. Some parts were kind of boring, especially towards the end. But it really made me laugh loudly in the school library while reading between lectures, which never happened to me before. It's not the kind of book that I would usually read, but it was so hilarious, and very entertaining. Thank you, Kris, for giving me the opportunity to read this book :->

Update 16 May, 2005:

Thanks aliaskris29, editorgrrl & aussieQ8 for this, it was great fun. For the first 30-40 pages I didn't think I was going to like it, but once I settled into the rhythm I really enjoyed it. Funny and sexy. I enjoyed all the secondary characters too, even the yucky ones. Elvis is a smart cat.

Off to tabyorky in the UK next. Posted 19/7/5.

Sorry all, a little late in getting this one back out. The next person on the list has asked to be skipped so Bet Me is on it's way to FiBe in Scunthorpe.

Unfortunately Sunlight BoBo aged 2, had a tiny writing experiment on the review page of this book, but not on the story at all. I've confessed to Aliaskris29, who has been very understanding and I promise it won't spoil any later participants enjoyment.

Anyway, I loved this book. I always enjoy Jennifer Crusie's novels, which always feature sassy, independent heroines ( usually with a tiny weight problem) and dangerously sexy men..They're not deep but they are fun. I also loved Min's shoes, but I'm convinced no straight man ever notices a girls footwear!!!

First, I apologize for my delay in journaling this book; I've been sans computer since before the holidays, so not only do I *have* this book, I've read it, loved it (! - as is characteristic of all the Crusie books I've read) and have already PM'ed Morpha for her addy, so that I may send it to continue its journey.

Thanks so very much for sharing this one, editorgrrl, and to all the participants for their patience in my delay! *mailed 01/09

Finished the book already!
I have enjoyed other books by this author more, but even a "bad" Crusie would be better than most other books I read. My favorite so far is "Faking It".
The shoes were hilarious, especially the bunny slippers. I know a few heterosexual males that do pay attention to a woman's footwear, especially if it's as sexy and fun as Min's.
Had a bit of a hard time getting into the book, but once in, I was hooked. I loved all the funny things that happened to the two main characters when they tried to deny how they felt about each other. I also enjoyed all the characters' differing phiilosophies on love. I even liked the little epilogue chapter at the end that took things a bit beyond "happily ever after". I've always wondered why a story often ends at marriage.

irishajo has asked to be shipped so I'll email next up on the list.

Many thanks to editorgrrl for offering this as a ring!

8 out of 10

Finished this book on Thursday night - well to be totally accurate it was really more like the wee hours of Friday morning :)

I had started it beginning of the week with an intent to finish it this weekend. I was about half way through it when I picked it up on Thursday night before bed. I was already hooked on it, but apparently I hit a can't put down section and ended up finishing the book when I really should have been sleeping (I had work the next day!!!)

So as you have probably already figured out, I really enjoyed this book. There were times when Cynthie and David's antics got a bit old and I would get annoyed, but the story of Min and Cal and the support of friends and family was great.

Will be passing this on to the next person as soon as I get an address. Thanks for sharing it :)

A quick, light read. I thought parts of the book were pretty entertaining, but some of the characters were annoying(Cynthie,David, Greg) and some of the situations too contrived (like Min cooking the rehearsal dinner- for goodness sake they know a guy who owns a restaurant!) I think it's me though as everyone else seemed to enjoy the book and I've just not been satisfied with any of the chick lit books I've read lately!

Thank you to aliaskris29 for the read! Once I get an address, I will mail it off to complete the ring.
