A family interned only because they are American-Japanese,stripped of their home, assets, jobs. I wasn't going to read as not my normal type of book, but it was compelling reading.

Thanks for the recommendation, Lytteltonwitch - I really enjoyed this book. A poignant reminder (particularly apt at the moment, when the media is concentrating on the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz) that we "good guys" had our share of prison camps too, and while they can never compare to the horrors of the German concentration camps, there were many families in America, and Britain, and Australia, and even here in New Zealand, whose lives were shattered just because they had the wrong ancestry.

I found this book to be terribly sad. It reinforced for me the stupidity of mankind and the futility of war. I was left with a sense of annoyance at the ignorance and rascism that abounded at the beginning of last century. This was definitely not a comfortable book to read.
