Excellent historical novel as well as a classical whodunnit. Set in 1537 Matthew Shardlake, a hunchback and long time reformer, is sent to the monastery of Scarnsea on the Sussex coast to investigate the beheading of one of Cromwell's commissioners Robin Singleton. Sansom has a good feel for the tensions and dangers encountered during a period of great social and political change.

Sooo thrilled to find this in the returned mystery box, i've been wanting to read it. Can't wait. Thank you Mastulela!
Up to the mark as a whodunit, but I was more particularly interested in this one for the historical setting. Anyone who studied the Tudors in history will have some knowledge of the Reformation & the dissolution of the monasteries. This touches on the unsettled nature of that era, the plundering,land-grabbing & opportunism, and the treatment of monks & monastery servants after a religious community was broken up.
Don't want to just cast this to random fortune, will look out for an apt reader or put in a mystery box.

Thanks for this Carol - I have recently read Soverign, Sansom's most recent Shardlake book - but hadn't read any others so will be really interested to read this one.
Really enjoyed this. Sansom is one of my favourite authors writing in this genre and what he succeeds in doing is writing about people in a really believable way whilst also really immersing you in the historical period.
