Journal Entry 1 by AnnaLibrarian from Richmond, Virginia USA on Wednesday, January 05, 2005

This book has not been rated.

This evening after work, I had a strong desire to go out to Goodwill, buy a bunch of books, and release them all over town. I've bought the books, and sometime this weekend off they will go. We need more BookCrossers in Ellensburg! :)

I didn't pick out many books I'd read myself. I went for paperbacks in good condition by popular authors in hopes that they would be more likely to get picked up. We'll see.

I checked the BC wishlists first, though, and I saw that quite a few people have this book listed. So, I'm offering it as a bookray instead. :)

8 out of 10

I finished this up this morning - it took a bit longer than expected to read, but it was a really enjoyable book! I'm really longing to go to visit Cortona now and really have to watch the movie when I have a chance. I'm glad this book included her impressions on the filming of the movie version - I've always wondered what goes through an author's mind when their book (especially a book about their own life, as this is) is made into a film.

I particularly enjoyed the renovation parts and wished there had been photos included. One of these days I'll make it to Italy!

Thanks for starting the ray, AnnaLibrarian. I'll PM the next person in line and hope to mail this out tomorrow. Otherwise it will be mailed out early next week.

UPDATE 2/10 - This was sent surface mail to miss-gonewest today.

Received yesterday from the USA - thanks so much to Lpree for posting this along to me.

I am so excited about having the chance to read this book as I adored the movie... and I love Italy!

I'm away on a houseboat holiday for the Anzac Day long weekend so this book has been safely packed and I am very much looking forward to sitting on the deck in the sun with a nice glass of wine and reading this novel.

I will post back shortly with my thoughts...

Thanks to AnnaLibrarian for starting this ring.

7 out of 10

I finally finished this book... as Lpree said, it did take longer than expected, but I guess I just really wanted to enjoy the descriptions... at times I really felt I was there in Italy.

I was a bit thrown with some subtle differences, as I had seen the movie and expected it to be EXACTLY the same... Honestly, you would think I would have learnt by now! Lol. I really did love the movie but was pleased with the translation from page to film (and back again).

Thanks to Anna Librarian for starting up this ring and allowing me to read this. I will get the next address and have this moving along quick smart.

Update 24th May: I PM'd Senna1 however she has already read this book and has asked to be skipped. I have PM'd the next in line for their address & I'll get this in the mail shortly... unfortunately this will probably have to go surface as I wasn't expecting to post all the way to Chile...

NB. I have sent 2 PM's to Lady-Eilan with no response, I will keep trying and then revert back to Annalibrarian....

Received in the mail Feb. 18th. Will read asap.

I have started and it is true, she can paint brilliant pictures with her words. It makes me wish for photos(not from the movie). As I love architecture(my hobby). The recipes are great. I should be finished with it by the end of the week and will then send it on.

Frances Mayes is such a lovely writer. The words just flowed and the language so vivid, it almost seemed like you were there. I just wanted to stop and savor it, which doesn't often happen to me, because it was such a beautiful book. I, too, wish there were pictures. I would love to see all of her property!

Although I'll never eat figs again, thanks for sharing this book! :P

I'm sorry this is so late. I thought I had already submitted a final journal entry. I really enjoyed this book. The diary was very interestng and I've tried one of the simpler recipes so far. It was excellent. If there's no one else on the list I'll release it while I'm in New Mexico this week.
