This is a book I got in a box I purchased from a yard sale. I did not have high hopes for it, think it to be a typical love story. However, I was greatly suprised. The book portrays and sensitive story with likable characters going through a turmoil I can only imagine. The author imagined it quite well. I enjoyed each chapter being from one of the main characters perspective, so you can get into the heads of all of them equally.

From the inside jacket cover:
"Schoolteacher ALlison Banks, the long divorces mother of a teenager on the cusp of college, has at last fallen in love. The object of her desire? Dana Stevens, a professor at the nearby university and her instructor for a summer film and literature course. Her daughter, Carly, watches with pleasure her mother's new found happiness, but her ex-husband, Will, the president of Vermont Public Radio, is jealous. Still secretly in love with his ex-wife, he finds himself increasingly unsettled by the prospect of Allison's attachment to another man."

Picked this up while at the Bookcrossing Meetup this evening. I read "Midwives" and it was really good, though pattyh told me that this one was quite different. I will get to this one soon, I hope!

I finally got a chance to read this book (I can't believe it took more than a year!), and I greatly enjoyed it, though my favorite Bohjalian book is still "The Midwives". I've already got someone in mind to send the book to and I'll be sending it off on Tuesday.

I read this book last year, and I wasn't very impressed. The story was interesting enough and I liked that different chapters were from different view points. This book came out in 2000, so it's almost 20 years old, and unfortunately it starts to be a bit dated. I'm sure I would have liked it much more if I had read it back when it was new, I guess back then this would have been a good story about the transition process. Now, I felt the book was way too preoccupied with the physical aspects of transitioning. There was also the really weird sexuality change - before transitioning, the trans character in this story liked women, but after transitioning, she started to like men. I guess this could happen, but it's extremely rare - people's sexuality is not related to their gender identity, and I have never heard about a sexuality change like this happening in real life after a person has transitioned. All in all, I think this book is not a very accurate portrayal of a transgender woman, and it's obviously written by a cisgender man, with only the knowledge that was available 20 years ago.
