I expected big things from this book and sometimes it delivered, but mostly it annoyed the hell out of me.

For the record - I loved Lord of The Rings and I thought Astin's performance was wonderful. Samwise touched me and was, as Astin mentions in the book, the character that made me cry.
I also loved The Goonies, Memphis Belle, 50 First Dates and any other number of films he has starred in.

However, the book didn't really grab me. I read the whole thing and loved some of the background stories from LOTR. There were interesting moments that made me laugh, cry and read them aloud to my household - but much of it was whingy and repitive and I just wanted to tell Astin to get over himself.

Reccommended for die-hard LOTR fans or Astin fans. And - you may well enjoy it more than I did :).

So... this book has been sitting on shelf for over two years... My apologies! My plans for a Monash Uni OBCZ folded some time ago, largely as a result of my graduation and resulting absence from campus.
I'll be setting up a temporary un-OBCZ over New Year's at the Nariel Creek Folk Festival and this book will be amongst those of offer.

It seems that this book made it safely back home with me from Nariel and I neglected to journal it. Oops!

This book and I are now definitely parting ways. It has been with me for quite some time, but due to downsizing I'm afraid I have to let it go...

This book will be given away to another bookcrosser in a bag of other books.

Travel safely, little book!

I have to agree with felicia-fairy's assessment of the book - Sean Astin comes across as a whiny self-important brat for most of it. Also, I'm not sure how much of it he actually wrote himself, and how much was ghost-written (per the "with Joe Layden" byline), but whoever it was, they did a terrible job - the structure is all over the place, and littered with clumsy (or just plain incomprehensible phrasings. Seriously needed a decent editor to knock it into shape.

But yeah, some interesting parts behind the scenes of the filming of Lord of the Rings and other movies, and glimpses into how the Hollywood system works.

I think you'd have to be a seriously die-hard fan to really enjoy it though - the book just put me off Astin completely.
