The Hours

Blurb on the back:
In 1920s London, Virginia Woolf is fighting against her rebellious spirit as she attempts to make a start on her new novel. A young wife and mother, broiling in a suburb of 1940s Los Angeles, yearns to escape and read her precious copy of Mrs Dalloway. And Clarissa Vaughan steps out of her smart Greenwich village apartment in 1990s New York to buy flowers for a party she is hosting for a dying friend.
This book is fantastic. I decided to read it after seeing the film starring Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore. It follows a day in the life of Virgina Woolf, Laura Brown (an American housewife in the late 1940s) and Clarissa Vaugh, a modern day Mrs Dalloway.
The style of writing in this book is beautiful and Cunningham flicks effortlessly from 1940s England to modern day New York. The author's love for Mrs Dalloway has lead me to invest a copy as well.
I've seen the film so some of the twists and turns were more obvious to me. But both the film and book complement each other as well. However, I advise reading the book first - as always ;-)

Yay, my first bookring! It looks like it's a very small ring at the moment. So far the following are taking part:
aubriel - UK
jaynereader - Italy
syrinpt - Portugal
b3lo - Portugal
Lisa-B - Germany
daemonwolf - UK
LennyB - England
Auglaise - Wales
Clear-Skies - England <--- book is here 27/07/2005
Iggi1812 - Scotland

and then home to me.
Extra Ring rules (for anyone that's unsure):
1) Please journal the book when you receive it.
2) Try to read the book within the month. If you find this is a bit difficult then PM me to let me know. In this case you can either have a few extra weeks to read the book or pass it onto the next person. If you wish I can put you on the bottom of the list.
3) Once you have finished the book, PM the next person the list for their address. If they don't reply within a few weeks let me know and then PM the next person on the list.
4) If anything comes up that isn't covered here, PM with any questions.
Happy reading!

This is a beautifully written book. Such attention is paid to detail and each character that though we only see a day in their lives, we know so much about them (while at the same time realising we know hardly anything at all really). .
it just arrived and is first on my list of TBRs, thanks drusillamac and aubriel for sharing this book, I'm looking forward to it
This is such a well-written book. It's a joy to read even though the subject matter leaves you feeling uneasy.
I'll definitely be looking out for his other novels.
thanks for sharing!
off to syrinpt on Monday

I sent the book to Lisa-B yesterday, seeing that b3lo already had the book.
I really liked this book, even though I missed the Mrs Dalloway references, because I never read that book.
I liked seeing how 3 women in 3 different era's dealt with their lives. And now I'm really curious to see the movie, which I heard is also great.
Thanks for lending the book!

The Hours has arrived from Portugal today. In preparation for it, I read Virginia Woolf's MrsDalloway a few weeks ago, for the first time. I am happy for that by its own!
Beautifully written! It very much catches the spirit of Virginia Woolf's Mrs.Dalloway, but stands for itself as well.
April 11th: I'll mail the book to the UK tomorrow.

Sent to me in error, passing on to LennyB
Received in the post this morning. Am away for a few days, so will try and make a start on it, while at mother in laws.
It took me a while to get into this book, as at some points I found the changing viewpoints frustrating, as I wanted to stick with that character for longer. I liked the way it all came together at the end, and not having seen the film yet, hadn't worked out the twists.
An interesting read, which has encouraged me to hire the video, and plan at some point to re-read Mrs Dalloway, which I read years ago.
I have PM'd Auglaise for her address, so hopefully this will be on the move again shortly.

Journal Entry 19 by Auglaise from -- Somewhere in London 🤷‍♀️ , Greater London United Kingdom on Monday, July 4, 2005
Received it last week, but couldn't journal at the time!
I really enjoyed it though, although I had to keep reminding myself which character I was reading when. I thought it was interesting how everything came together in the end. Thanks for letting me read it! I'll be sending it on to Merboy13 tomorrow. ^_^

Received in the post this morning (Royal mail are sloooow); great timing since I've almost finished Across The Nightingale Floor. It's next on my to-read pile!
It appears that this book has been stalled with Clear-Skies since July. I have tried PMing her/him and have had no response to ISOs on the message boards. In this case I'll have to declare this book currently traveling as the status is unknown.
Thank you to those who agreed to take part and didn't get the chance to read it. I do urge you to try and get another copy as the story is fantastic.

This book has just hopped on over to the Lost Book Island as it seems to have strayed from its intended path. It seems to have taken a time out with a BookCrosser and forgot to return to the bookring as it was planned.
This book will be given a nice room at the Lost Book Island and will be invited to join in on all of the fun. There are plenty of activites and laughter to keep this book busy throughout The Hours. It is hoped that the next journal entry will come very soon. One that will once again set this book on its journey so that it may finish out its bookring path.
