Journal Entry 1 by MaryZee from Taneytown, Maryland USA on Thursday, December 23, 2004
Picked this up at a yard sale, for BC. From the cover - Here, in Paul Gallico's successor to his best-seller, The Silent Miaow, is a delightful account of man's ageless love affair with Felis, making clear, once and for all, the profound influence each has had on the other. No one - least of all Paul Gallico - claims to have penetrated all the mysteries of the cat, but with Osamu Nishikawa's inspired photographs, Gallico makes an honorable foray into a reserved area that can never be fully understood by man. The cat's behavior and habits, grace and beauty, dignity and charm, guile and love, are thoroughly analyzed. We are given the best of Gallico's experiences with all kinds of cats - short-haired, long-haired, alley cat, show cat, good cat and bad cat, sweet and sour, dull and bright, pompous and enchanting. Gallico also includes the views cats have toward humans - as illogical masters, adored providers, and even those beings beneath their contempt. Throughout the book, too, are memorable, full-color Nishikawa photographs. All ailurophiles (cat lovers) and even a few ailurophobes (cat haters) will be thoroughly charmed and delighted by this superb compendium of cat lore and logic, stunning illustrations, and shrewd observations. Lovely book with 30 pages of text at the front, and the remaining 130 pages are poems and photos of cats. 4/7/05 update - Just finished this lovely book. Text at the front is various essays on aspects and characteristics of cats. Remainder of book is lovely color photos by Osamu Nishikawa, with poems to go with the photos. Just a lovely book.

Journal Entry 3 by glade1 from McLeansville, North Carolina USA on Tuesday, April 19, 2005
Received in the mail from MaryZee today and have already started reading it. So far, I love it. He says many "truths" about cats. It's wonderful to read something by a cat lover, as it sometimes seems we are in the minority.

I enjoyed this book. What Gallico says in his essay section resonates with me in many ways. I cannot imagine NOT loving cats. The photos are cute but a little dated looking (because of the color quality). Some of the poems were "spot-on" (I especially liked "Always Pause on the Threshold" and "Confession") but some didn't impress me and one, "Good News," about a cat as Satan, really bothered me. I have gotten Ceili's address and hope to mail this to her tomorrow. Thanks for sharing, MaryZee! Mailed to Ceili on Friday, April 22.

I enjoyed this book very much, particularly the photographs. (The blue point siamese! Pouncing kittens!) Mr. Gallico sure seems to know his furry friends well, though I did find him a bit heavy handed at times--overly competitive with dog and bird fans. Perhaps he could be the first "feline apologist?" On its way to MarciNYC--should arrive tomorrow or the day after.

A lovely book which took me longer to read that I anticipated. The poems were fun and I particular liked "The Chair" (p 38) which is you substituted "bed" for "chair" you'd have my Stanley. I found Gallico's essays to be be tedious to read -- but thought too that it might have been the format of the book. They seemed so long -- and the width of the text did inimidate me somewhat. Still, i read them and while they were enjoyable, it was the poetry and photos which I liked best of all. (Now I want a little white kitten!) I'll be PMed Libertine today to make sure that her address has not changed. While I will make every effort to get this in the mail to her this week, it could be next week as that's when payday is.

Some adorable colour photos and I liked the way the poems seemed to have been written directly from them. Some of the poems were amusing, some annoying.... As for the essays...I have to say I got downright annoyed with his rant about desexing cats..calling it 'mutilation'. And this after an essay about strays/homeless cats! Yes, its all very well to ave an ideal...but lets look at the realities of cats that have not been neutered. But, he makes up for this annoyance, my hitting the nail on the head in his "Love" essay... about cat lovers being "able to bear to love something or someone without expecting a return". It took me longer to get through this book than expected and for that I offer my apologies....I will now try to get in touch with the last person on this list and getthe book moving again...

I'm so sorry I have had this book so long!!! :( Please excuse me!!! This book looks really nice and Paul Gallico is a favorite author of mine. I'm sorry it came to me in a time when I didn't feel I had time to read. I got to stressed with everything last year and now I have fibromyalgia and the book is a bit too heavy for me, so I just have to pass it on. I have just sent a PM to GateGypsy for her address and as soon as I have that address I will mail the book.

Journal Entry 21 by GateGypsy from Whitehorse, Yukon Canada on Wednesday, March 12, 2008
Arrived safe and sound today! Looking forward go giving this a peruse. I may take it with me on my vacation and let my cat-crazy kid sister look through it, too, before I pass it on. Shouldn't be too long. Thanks for sharing, MaryZee! *********************** Wow, ok, I totally meant to get done with this way sooner than I did. However, I have finished! I enjoyed the poems and the author's musing section which started out the book, and the photographs... The section about strays totally made me cry, I'm such a softie. It made me wonder about the author, because I know that the photographs were by a Japanese photographer -- was the author living in Japan, too, and talking about Japanese strays? or European ones? or... where? Does it even matter, in the end? A stray's life is a tough one, no matter what corner of the globe it's in... still. I've lived in Japan, and wept at the sight of strays who I couldn't save. Ah. Well, as sad as it is, that's the part of the book that really stuck with me. If only I'd been as impressed by the section on Beauty, eh? **laughs** Update July 11-08: I have gecko4ever's address. Payday is one week from today. Planning an epic post office run, and this book will be among those being sent away. Thanks for your patience with me! Update August 12-08: In the post!

I finished this book much sooner than today but my workload didn't allow me to get it packed up and mailed out until today. The book is now on its way to Krl112 in New Jersey. I'll start with briefly commenting on the surprising number of harsh entries in this book. They were in there and I didn't like them. But most of the poems were excellent and spoke so fittingly about the way I feel or interpret what my own cats are thinking. I did have my favorites such as The Catnip Dance as well as "And Lead Us Not Into..." which was very appropriate during the Thanksgiving holiday. I completely relate to The Door as I spend far too much time there letting in or out our many cats. Of course they feel that they must make a grand exit individually instead of collectively. With regard to The Communal Dish, that all sounds nice in theory and each of our seven cats has their own bowl, but usually the bowl next to them looks more inviting than the one they squat before at feeding time. And finally, Rendezvous which was just plain sweet. All in all, my husband and I thoroughly loved reading, laughing and commenting about every page. MaryZee, thank you so much for sharing this book with all of us.

This is a very short book--so I finished it already! I loved the pictures and some of the poetry. It was a very cute book. Thank you very much, MaryZee, for sharing this as a bookray. My kitty was very interested in this book! He sat on my lap and looked at each picture with me, and then rubbed his face all over the book. Ha! I'm sure many other people (and cats) will continue to enjoy this book. I'm ready to send it to the next person in line. I've PM'd for an address. I will update when the book has been sent on.

Journal Entry 31 by cordelia-anne from Decatur, Georgia USA on Saturday, August 15, 2009
It seems I was mysteriously added to this bookring. I received the book this afternoon. It's charming. Tomorrow or the day after, I will see Miss Prissy, the cat who has enslaved my mothers. Didn't someone say that people don't own cats, that cats actually take people as slaves. Anyway I will look at this book before sending it along, though I'm not currently a cat slave. Perhaps I'm meant to be. Anyway you all, don't be distressed, I'm PMing Hiddencat now. I will send this along.

Journal Entry 32 by cordelia-anne from Decatur, Georgia USA on Saturday, August 22, 2009
This is a darling book. My mother would love it. Miss Prissy and she are getting along well. They had a dignified reunion after Mama's trip cross country to visit my brother. The other brother became Prissy's slave in Mama's absence. Mama claims to be a dog person but actually I think she's more like a cat in her mothering style. I've been her slave these past few years. I liked this little poem from the book, The Secret: Oh... I didn't know you were there. I have just come from a secret place Where I had a secret thought. The secret thought Was beautiful. The secret place somewhere Where you will never find it. Sometimes I can't even find it Myself. I wish I could tell you My secret thought It was so beautiful Or where I thought of it But then it wouldn't be secret anymore For you'd know. bookcrossing is a bit of a secret place. I suppose that's why so many cat lovers enjoy it.

I have finished this book and am just waiting for a reply from MazzleStar. not sure what to do with it until then so I have put it in the space reserved on my bookshelf for library books. Im currently trying to minimise the stuff in my room so Im only allowed to keep books that fit on my shelf. I moved In to a room half the size of my old one. through personal choice and am now trying to keep it tidy. there's lovely little neighborhood cat who sometmes comes to visit me when im working outside. She is all black with a glossy coat. she sit for hours watching our chickens but if im sat outsied she jumps on my lap and demands attention.
