The Way I Found Her is narrated by Lewis Little, a precocious thirteen year old who loves chess, his family, his Action Man doll Elroy ("He's a Royal Marine"), sex and mysteries, not necessarily in that order. The novel takes place during a summer Lewis and his mother are spending in Paris, while his mother works on an English translation of the latest in a series of medieval romances penned by her great friend and occasional employer, Valentina. To pass the time, Lewis explores Paris with Valentina's dog Sergei, and reads Le Grand Meaulnes, a 1913 novel by French author Alain-Fournier (aka Henri Alban-Fournier). It's a reasonably idyllic summer -- if marked by some distinctly unpleasant adult undertones -- until Valentine mysteriously disappears and Lewis decides he must find her. Lewis is a great character (the book reminded me of both my childhood adoration for Harriet the Spy and the best parts of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime), and The Way I Found Her was un-put-downable, at least until the last sixth of the book when things get a little improbable. Nonetheless, highly recommended. You can read a review of The Way I Found Her in the New York Times here.
