I like Barbara Kingsolver, and this is supposed to be one of her better books, but I got halfway through, put it down and forgot it. I can't even remember what it's about, and I have too many books to read to spend time with one I can't remember.

I struggled a bit at the beginning, but I loved the writing styles so much I pressed on. This is about 3 people's stories that are lightly woven together. I didn't particularly enjoy Deanna's story, but I did like the other 2.

A deep satisfying read.

8 out of 10

Thank you, arrived today.

27.1.08
I finished the last 300 pages of this book in 24 hours, when I should have been doing other things. It demanded to be read. I read 'Poisonwood Bible' a few weeks ago and didn't enjoy it, even though Kingsolver is clearly a skilled writer. This book was entirely different. I was immediately at home with the characters, they were artfully painted. I paricularly like the theme of hope that all the characters had at the end, for their respecive lives.

I will send this on as soon as Mallary has sent me her details.

Thank you for sharing, I really enjoyed this read.

I absolutely loved this book, I could hardly put it down!
I felt as though I really got to know the characters, they were so well-depicted, their lives were totally separate but their stories intertwined. Another triumph for Ms Kingsolver!
Ready to pass onto gringuitica.

Edit: 19th March, PMing gringuitica for the second time as I haven't heard from her.

Oh, no! I've been hit by another ringslide!!! I'm currently in the middle of two others I need to send out, so this one will be a little bit before I can start it. Seems like it always happens this way... :)

I love the way the author loops the story around and parallels the characters' lives. I love the earthy elements, the farm life details, the moths. The only thing that brought this one down from a ten for me was the unrealistic portrayal of the Forest Service career. I've worked for the Forest Service for 10 years and the whole setup of the first chapter had me shaking my head. I only kept reading because the book was so highly praised by 'crossers. It's a good thing I did keep on.

Journal Entry 19 by lostbookisland on Saturday, August 29, 2009

This book has not been rated.

This book has washed ashore at the Lost Book Island after not being heard from for many months. This new arrival will be shown to a room and be allowed a bit of rest before being introduced to the many fun things to do here at the island.

All around there are books sipping cool drinks under shady palms while other books participate in a wide variety of beach sports. There is plenty of sand, surf and sun here for all of the lost and wayward books to enjoy.

It is hoped that very soon a new journal entry will come to rescue this book from the island and send it back out into the BookCrossing world so that it may continue on its journey. It is hoped that the new journal entry will tell all the interested parties where this book has been this long time and where it will be traveling to next.
