From the back cover:
Kate never felt more at home than in the company of her grandfather in his New England kitchen. She is the only soul capable of coaxing him away from his mysterious experiments in astro-physics long enough to enjoy picnics in the garden. And only Grandfather's gentle humor could lift Kate out of her doldrums.

But Kate's world is about to be turned upside down. Grandfather's research has attracted some unwanted attention as an otherworldly visitor nearly destroys his laboratory. And before he can fully reveal why he has been seeking the connection between the nature of light and the nature of the human soul, he disappears--leaving Kate to search for him...and for the secret that can save the Earth and the entire solar system from annihilation.

5 out of 10

I didn't really like this book very much. I think the reason why was because it felt too much like it was copying a lot of A Wrinkle in Time (one of my favorite books) and didn't really become its own book until over halfway through. By that time, I just couldn't get into it.

In the story, Meg, oops, I mean Kate and her dog Fortinbras, oops, I mean Cumberland have to rescue Kate's father, oops, I mean grandfather, from somewhere in space. The star Trethoniel is losing PCL and the grandfather is trying to figure out how to save it so that he can also save the sun. The enemy is a big black thing called It, oops, I mean The Darkness, and Kate passes through it and lands on a planet and is rescued by Aunt Beast, oops, I mean Ariella. And love conquers all. Mostly.

Heartlight arrived safetly in the mail today. I think it is really amusing that it has come to visit NewEngland given the setting of the story. I hope to read this in the next couple days and release it at Arisia

This definately has similarities to A Wrinkle in Time, but it also reminded me of the Narnia series a little bit. I think this latter resemblence is mainly due to the quasi-spiritual messages included within. When I was a child such stories didn't bother me, but as I get older I find that they do. Unlike the Narnia series Heartlight is much less Christian in nature though.
