The mailman brought it today. Thanks! ------------------- I don't read much SF; how that would change if it were more like this wonderful book! Imagine Borges disillusioned, and you'll get an idea of the tone that Vonnegut uses. Still, he's a pacifist, and I like that. A wonderful circular story, and a reflection on writing at the same time.

I really enjoyed this book, it is fantastic and sets your imagination running, yet also speaks of the horrors of war in a much deeper way than a more explanatory, descriptive book would do. One to be recommended! Sending to Pam99

I enjoyed this book, although now that I've read it I don't think it was this one I'd read before. It's certainly different from the other Kurt Vonnegut books that I remember reading. I have BFD's address and will try to mail today.

Journal Entry 13 by BlossomU on Sunday, May 01, 2005
Very readable, a non linear take on all wars, second world war and the bombing of Dresden in particular. At the beginning I was thinking maybe it was too didactic, but the outrage and indigantion are so strong and right the book works perfectly. Very moving. I just shipped it to Jebbie74 in Canada, who I hope enjoys it as much.

Journal Entry 15 by Jebbie74 from Oshawa, Ontario Canada on Tuesday, May 24, 2005
Picked this up and read it in a few hours. I was comparing it to the movie as I had recently re-watched it and I must say that I enjoyed the book a bit more. It explained why things were the way they were and I feel the movie missed some of that. Pming Teenage-faerie as she is next.

So it goes. The catch phrase of this book was overused. Overall, I was not impressed with this book. I could not figure out if Billy made it out of Dresden, or if the book was the confused ramblings of a prisoner of war.

Journal Entry 22 by mitziyah from Seattle, Washington USA on Friday, September 16, 2005
Woah. This was such a FULL novel (even though it was rather slender). I wish, oh I wish, I could have read this in a Literature class because I know that I only scratched the surface in some places. Will do some research into the literary criticism on this novel. It was such a pleasure to read...and so unexpected (I had NO IDEA that aliens were going to play a part in this story). Reading this novel also highlighted to me that I haven't been reading enough really great "literature" lately. I read much fiction, and find it very enjoyable, but it's been a few months since I've read something that was this layered and plotted and brilliant. (I've been in a "travel memoirs" and "mindless fluffy fiction" slump lately...thanks for helping me break out of it). Can't wait to read more Vonnegut. I was really struck by the fullness of his characters. Billy Pilgrim (I mean, come on, even his NAME has significance) had such a sweetness and decency to him. Just an amazing read. I'll definitely have these characters and ideas floating around in my brain for the next few days. On a purely business/bookring note: Both Mrbrant and now Luvtink81 have asked to be skipped, as they are too busy with school/work to participate in the ring right now. So, I'll be sending a PM to Breeni today. Hopefully she'll respond with her address in a timely manner. *smile* Thanks for sharing this novel.

You all may or may not believe this, but Breeni just wrote me to say that she has gotten her own copy of this book. So, I'm now sending a PM to BigJohnlefty. If he cancels too, then I'll send this book back to Apolonia.

Journal Entry 26 by BigJohnLefty from Des Moines, Iowa USA on Tuesday, October 25, 2005
As with all of Vonnegut's books, I enjoyed this as much as the first few times I read it in high school, but understood it much more this time around. I especially like the way certain characters and places keep re-appearing in his works. So it goes.

Journal Entry 29 by SqueakyChu from Rockville, Maryland USA on Tuesday, December 06, 2005
This was a pretty quick read. I don't remember which, if any, Vonnegut books I've read in the past. This book did not seem familiar. It was okay. I think I probably would have appreciated this book a bit more had I read it back when it was first published. There are other anti-war books (Catch 22, When Johnny Got His Gun, All Quiet on the Western Front) that I liked a whole lot more than this book. I'm not sure whether or not I'll be looking for more Vonnegut books in the future. Thanks, Apolonia, for sharing this book with me. It's now back in the mail to you.

Verrrrry interesting book. I love the story telling, but I could see how the jumping around could be hard to follow. I'm still ponding what my opinion of Billy is.... I'm posting a new thread to continue this ring as Noumena and Ixion would like to be skipped and I have not heard back from Apolonia!

Journal Entry 37 by Hawkette from Ballarat, Victoria Australia on Thursday, June 07, 2007
Finished this one this morning on the tram. I really enjoyed this, in a floaty go with the flow kind of way. Clearly this book set the way for so many time travel books that have been written since. I was in Dresden last year, and could see some of the remains of the bombing. Such a beautiful place! (http://jouljet.blogspot.com/2006/09/oktoberfest-and-german-roadtrip.html) Have the address to send this one on, but will wait till I get the promotional material for the 2007 Australian BookCrossing Convention bookmarks to send along with it! Hint hint - it's in Melbourne in October, if anyone wants to come!! Hee hee!

Journal Entry 39 by froggirlwendy from Brisbane, Queensland Australia on Friday, August 31, 2007
My first Vonnegut book and I'm still not sure what I thought of it. I found the jumping forward and back to be annoying, although the storyline wasn't bad and I enjoyed Billy's character. Maybe I will read this again some time in the future and see if my opinion changes. Thanks for adding me to the ring, Freelunch has requested to be skipped so I will send this to DrCris, and 'so it goes'.

Journal Entry 41 by DrCris from Templestowe, Victoria Australia on Thursday, September 06, 2007
Arrived safely. For some reason, I have about 4 books that I am reading at the moment. Once that tangle gets sorted out, I will read this one. It was discussed on the First Tuesday Bookclub a couple of months ago, so I have an idea of how it runs. I am looking forward to reading it.

|

|
Journal Entry 42 by DrCris from Templestowe, Victoria Australia on Monday, September 10, 2007
I know its wrong to compare mediums, but this bookr eally reminded me of Donnie Darko (but less confusing, and more indignant). I enjoyed it, but the book did not race for me. I liked the way the characters clicked together. However, I found the style too self-aware (I mean the semi-autobiographical style). Also, I get annoyed with time-travel books when they flag events far in advance. However, I really liked the clanging of the catch-phrase. It woke me up each time to remind me what the book was about.

|
Journal Entry 45 by VeganMedusa from Invercargill, Southland New Zealand on Thursday, September 20, 2007
A little bit less of the "So it goes" would have let me enjoy this more. But otherwise I found it very rewarding, although I'm feeling shamefully ignorant of the Dresden bombing. I'll have to remedy that. One of those books that needs mulling over. I'm just reading a hitchhiker book to send with this, and will post on 24/9.

This book was waiting for me when I got back from vacation. Thank you for including me in the bookring, Breeze! And thank you for the extra book, VeganMedusa! I am reading a thickish book for another ring right now, but I'll read this and pass it along as soon as I can.

|
Journal Entry 47 by zosime from Marshfield, Wisconsin USA on Tuesday, November 20, 2007
I finished this on the 11th but forgot to journal. This book reminded me of why I love Vonnegut's writing. He has a wonderful talent for pointing out the absurdities of life. Even when he's writing about something that would normally be heart-wrenching and tragic, he somehow twists it so that I think, "Oh man, that just figures, doesn't it?" I don't know how he does it, but for some reason I enjoy it. I'm still waiting to hear back from Chocolatefishy. I didn't realize it had been so long (November is flying!) so I'll send another PM this evening. Thanks for sharing this book!

Journal Entry 53 by NICNIC2 from St Andrews, Scotland United Kingdom on Wednesday, May 07, 2008
My initial thoughts were that this was quite similar to All Quiet on the Western Front. But I changed my mind as I read on. Whereas AQWF was coherent and fairly linear this felt jumbled and I wasn't really engaged in it any point. I admit I might be missing the finer points here but I honestly don't see what all the fuss is about with this novel. I'm glad I got teh chance to read it though - thanks for including me :) I have the next member's details so I'll send it on tomorrow.

Very interesting book. I've heard about this book for years, but never read it. It was considered too controversial when I was in high school, so thank you for sharing. I have to admit that I was a little lost in the beginning because I was trying to read too much meaning into what he was saying. Once I chose to accept the writing as is I realized some of the finer points he was expressing. This would have been a fascinating book to study in school. Thanks for sharing!! I recieved this in the mail today, and will read asap! Thanks for sharing! 6-8-08 Okay! This was about the most strangest book I have ever read in my life. I did understand it but, wow, this guy must have been suffering from PTSD, paranoia, and severe hallucinations, all from world war 2. To be in that state of mind is frightening. That is all I have to say about the book. I will PM the next person on the list and get the book moving next week! :)
