Merry Christmas!
USA only please. Next year I'll do an international free gift.

Journal Entry 3 by wingcrrcookiewing from Tecumseh, Oklahoma USA on Tuesday, December 14, 2004

This book has not been rated.

This journal arrived in the mail today and it is truly beautiful. The book is titled May Your Life Be Filled With Happiness because that inscription appears in it in several places.

I just love the beautiful blue color of the journal cover and pages and the flower motif is wonderful.

I will probably wait until the new year to begin writing in the book and I think that I want to give it a crochet theme. I might find some people in my charity crochet groups that would be willing to pass the journal around and talk about how crochet fits into their lives as well. I am not sure that any of them will journal the book through bookcrossing but I should be able to keep track of it by other means.

Thank you for the wonderful gift.

C

PS Thank you for the Christmas Cards. I will be able to send these out through booksforsoldiers.com and they should be just in time for Christmas. Well just an update here. booksforsoldiers is in the midst of a change and so I didn't get to send out the cards this year .... maybe next year.

About the picture .... this is a picture of the "crochet journal" and it's backdrop is my latest crochet project. This is going to be a blanket for my hubby. This blanket will most likely live on the back of the loveseat mostly as a decoration. The pattern is a free pattern from a yarn wrapper of Mainstay's yarn. The pattern is called Light & Lacy. The yarn color that is being used is Red Heart's Shaded Denim.

Today I am working on the preliminary work to get this journal ready to move in the new year. Here is what I wrote on the first few inside pages to explain the idea of this book to non-bookcrossers.

(I edited out the long narrative since it no longer applies.)

Journal Entry 5 by wingcrrcookiewing from Tecumseh, Oklahoma USA on Friday, April 15, 2005

This book has not been rated.

I am trying again at offering this up to one of the yahoo groups devoted to crochet that I belong to. Earlier this year the concept was not as popular as I thought it would be and then I lost the list of the two people that did want to join so I thought that I would try again. LOL

28 April 2005
Well, it seems that everyone is shying away from the concept of a Bookring and so I will wait and try something different.

Journal Entry 6 by wingcrrcookiewing from Tecumseh, Oklahoma USA on Friday, July 01, 2005

This book has not been rated.

I just offered this up on the forums as a Bookring. I hope that there are some BookCrossers out there that want to pass this journal around.

(I had a list of BookRing rules here but I edited them out after deciding this would not be a good bookring.)

I never got the chance to start this. Maybe when I get re-settled after the move. I will make a next years New Year's Resolution to get this book out and moving along.

Journal Entry 8 by wingcrrcookiewing from Tecumseh, Oklahoma USA on Wednesday, August 22, 2007

This book has not been rated.

It has been over 2 years since I have really thought about doing anything with this book. I always wanted to send it on a bookring to my crochet friends but after several books getting lost and stalled I couldn't let it go into that unknown fate. I also found it hard to find crocheters that wanted to be included in the bookring and I was afraid that my non-BookCrossing crochet friends would not understnad the concept.

Now I have a new idea for this wonderful journal. I am going to use it to record meetings with BookCrossers and pass it around at meetings and such so that people can sign in, doodle, or write random thoughts. It will also help me keep track of the BookCrossers I have met in real life.

I'm going to write in a couple entries from past meetings and BookCrossing activities and then move on to those in the future!

22 April 2007
International Day of the Book
Kensington, Maryland

Welcome to Old Town Kensington's Celebration of the International Day of the Book.

April 23 is a symbolic day in world literature. Declared as International Day of the Book by UNESCO in 1995, this celebration of books and literature draws it's inspiration from a Catalan tradition, the Festival of the Rose.

Legend has it that Saint George, Patron Saint of Catalonia and international knight-errant, slew a dragon about to devour a beautiful Catalan princess. From the dragon's blood sprouted a rosebush, from which the hero plucked the prettiest rose for the princess. Hence the traditional Rose Festival celebrated in Barcelona since the Middle Ages to honor chivalry and love. In 1923, this lover's "festa" became even more poetic when it merged with "el dia del llibre", or The Day of the Book, to mark the nearly simultaneous deaths of Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare, the two giants of literary history, on April 23, 1616.

On this day in Barcelona, bookstalls and street festivities run the length of the picturesque La Rambla, the old city's main boulevard and, according to the Spanish author Garcia Lorca, "the only street in the world which I wish would never end".

The Town of Kensington, Kensington Literary Group, and the Pauli Bellet Foundation Catalan Library, invite you to celebrate this wonderful day on Howard Ave, our "La Rambla".

It was in Kensington that I first met up with SqueakyChu and CreativeMGE. At our tent we piled books everywhere and encouraged passerbys to have a free book. We managed to give away somewhere in the range of 200-300 books.

Panera Bread in Waldorf, Maryland

I set up a meeting at the Panera Bread in Waldorf, MD and sent PMs to as many people as I could.

I got the chance to meet up with nyannayon and she gave me several books to pass along to other BookCrossers at Saturday's meeting.

7 July 2007 (Saturday 3-5pm)
Panera Bread in Waldorf, Maryland

I set up two meetings at the Panera Bread in Waldorf, MD because I wasn't sure if a weeknight or a weekend would be better. In terms of attendance, Saturday worked out better. Today I got to see SqueakyChu again but she got a little lost coming to Waldorf and she not only came in late but didn't get to stay long.

ResQgeek and melydia came and we chatted for quite some time. We traded books and stories and had good food and fun. I set up a little crossing zone with a suitcase of books. The table was covered in a yellow tablecloth and had balloons to attract attention. On the table was bookmarks, fliers, brochures and other freebies. We were surprised to note that people would stop and look, and take books and bookmarks. One table of people took books and then sat near us and talked excitedly about them. It was a very neat experience.

Ths picture shows crrcookie's son, lilgrovers. At this meeting he is almost 10 months old. He enjoys coming to the meetings and making new friends. The group really enjoyed playing with him. He is happy as long as the food holds out and is becoming a big fan of Panera Bread.

Panera Bread in Alexandria, Virginia

Some of the highlights of the meeting included trading books and talking about recent reads. I brought a copy of Hector Protector that I checked out from the library and we talked about the comments it had gotten int he forum. Some of the meeting attendees weren't reading the forums and got quite a shock at what was said about this poor little children's book.

Another favorite thing to talk about is attending conventions. ResQgeek has some great stories from Charleston. It is a delight to hear real life stories about the people we only know on time.

The Alexandria Panera Bread is a great place to meet with lots of table space and places to wild release books.

The 2007 National Book Festival, organized and sponsored by the Library of Congress and hosted by First Lady Laura Bush will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007, on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., between 7th and 14th streets from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The festival is free and open to the public.

I am going to this event and there is a planned meeting of BookCrossers at 2pm in front of the Museum of Natural History. I will be taking this journal so that the BookCrossers I meet will get the chance to sign it and write in it. I have little cards made up printed with the BCID so anyone who signs this book can take it home with them and make a journal entry so they may be able to track future entries on this book.

Journal Entry 18 by wingcrrcookiewing from Tecumseh, Oklahoma USA on Thursday, September 27, 2007

I took a total of 268 books to the festival and only returned with 9. That means I released 259 books!!!

SqueakyChu has been keeping track of the stats in the forums and here is the totals as of 15 October 2007:

Total books released- 313

--Wild catches- 9
--Caught by BookCrossing members- 7
Total books caught- 16

Total new members- 5
Percentage caught- 5%

The MBCZ was a big success! Lilgrovers, comfortable in his booster seat and shaded with the umbrella, was riding in high style throughout the day. He attracted a lot of attention just because he is cute! (But maybe that is just Mommy being biased?)

The wagon was decorated with a plastic yellow tablecloth stuck on with a ton of packing tape. The pockets near the handle are zippered pockets for three ring notebooks and held pamphlets, bookmarks, and other BookCrossing info. The drawer underneath the wagon held the contents of the diaper bag and other personal items so that the rest of the space could hold as many books as possible. On the back of the wagon is an OBCZ sign proclaiming free books!

The whole event was wonderful even though the wagon was heavy and somewhat bulky. Getting on and off the train was interesting but not too difficult. I actually made two full trips from the car to the festival so that at lunchtime I could restock with a fresh load of books.

I hope to take the MBCZ on more excursions and look forward to adding more pictures to the physical book and also to the journal entries here.

I came. I released books. I took a few books home.

It was fun to see everyone again at today's BookCrossing meeting in Rockville. I managed not to bring anything home for Mt. TBR, though I did grab a few books for various themed releases. I made a brief (and not terribly witty) entry in the journal, so here's the online entry as welll.

Anyone who was at Panera Bread today that would like me to make them a t-shirt like mine, please send me a Private Message.

I met CrrCookie (and several others) at the Panera Bread in Rockville today. We had a great time, chatting and sharing books with others (although the store manager wasn't too fond of us ;)

I only brought home 2 books today, and took 6 down. All of my books were caught by BookCrossers, except Pompeii which went home with a new owner today. I brought home a great looking historical fiction about the French Revolution (back says it's for fans of Tracy Chevalier and Sarah Dunant, which caught my attention) - Annette Vallon by James Tipton, an arc which isn't released till next month. This will, unfortunately be on Mt. TBR for a bit. I also brought home a copy of Island of the Blue Dolphins to be released at the book fair soon.

I love meeting BookCrossers. They're my favorite people. Looking forward to seeing CrrCookie, SqueakyChu, and ResQgeek in Westminster at the book fair in a couple of weeks.

Today at the book fair at the Carroll County Community College, I took another look through the journal, and I noticed that crrcookie pasted a picture of a piece of chocolate cake in after the last Panera Bread meeting, with a note suggesting that people ask me to explain. So, here's an explanation.

It seems that chocolate cake has become something of a ResQgeek trademark since the BookCrossing convention in Charleston, back in April. I ordered a piece of chocolate cake during the Trivia Night competition during the convention, and got more than I bargained on. The cake was three layers tall, and was almost a quarter of the cake! I took a lot of ribbing that night for my "little" snack, and now I seem to find myself getting a piece of chocolate cake almost anytime I get together with BookCrossers.

The picture uploaded to this journal entry was taken by skyring right after I got my cake, and shows just how monstrous it was...

I had more fun today than should be allowed. I really enjoyed wandering around the book fair and wild releasing with SqueakyChu! We left books on benches, ledges, shelves, and even in the elevators. We'd go back to the table and restock and we'd look at where we had left books and they would be gone! Too much fun!!! - crrcookie

This picture is of one of the areas where there were several benches in a little square. Each bench would get a book and lots of books disappeared this way.

Hi Everybody! I had a great time meeting all of you at the CCC Book Fair. Everyone was so enthusiatic and I found that contagious. Which is a good thing since I am not the most active bookcrosser. I really hope to become more involved. Please feel free to PM me with bc activities you all have coming up. I love the camaraderie. Bookcrossing is really getting connected. I'm so glad to be involved. Hope to see you all again soon! Oh...I forgot to add that the photo is beautiful!! I added it to my bookshelf page. Not sure if this OK or not. Please let me if I need to remove it. Thanks!

Mazzio's Pizza - 104th and Western

20 December 2007

I set up this meeting during my holiday vacation in hopes that I would get to meet some BookCrossing friends. Aramena plans to be here but out of 150 other invites I only got 2 "maybe" RSVPs. I hope that some other people decide to show up.

This book was something that I made sure I packed to bring with me. I hope that whoever shows up here enjoys looking through it and gets a kick out of seeing all of the things that we do in the DC area since I started using this as a BookCrossing meeting journal. I have the camera and if I get any good pictures I'll be sure and upload them into journal entries so everyone can see.

I collected the following journal entry in this book from coolgurl24 who came by for a few minutes.

coolgurl24 - Nice to meet you! I had no idea that BookCrossers was so extensive.

Well, the restaurant is closed now and I was here from 2pm to 10pm and only one BookCrosser came to visit me. coolgurl24 showed up for just a few minutes. She said that she had other plans for tonight before getting my email but that she wanted to stop by and drop off a few books. I told her that I would help them to travel along. Aramena was planning to come but PM'd me and said that her car was acting up and she didn't want to chance drivng over here.

I am so sad that more people couldn't attend but I know that with the holiday season that things are pretty tightly scheduled. I am just happy that the Mazzio's offers free Wi-Fi and that my hubby was kind enough to let me have his laptop ALL DAY today so that I could catch up on my emails, my journaling and all other things internet!

The next time I make a trip to Oklahoma I will be sure and make another meeting attempt in hopes that others will get the chance to meet up then. I hope that my next trip will be one where I drive and I'll try and pick a time when i can bring the MBCZ wagon. Perhaps it can make an appearance at some sort of fun local event.

13 January 2008

For some reason I forgot to journal this until now. Here are the comments that were recorded in the book at the meeting.

Melydia has too many books!

Crrcookie and lilgrovers came to try and unload books. In the past 7 days we have registered 900+ books and the avalanche is threatening.

Authorauthor has too many books too. So I brought three today to release here - and stopped at Borders on the way and bought more. They just keep multiplying.

Well, I stopped at Yesterday's Rose and bought two bags full of books to replace those 10 I'm releasing in this Panera today. :)
SqueakyChu

KateKintail made it too! :)
I hit Yesterday's Rose earlier and managed to eascape with only one bag mostly for challenges. I've registered a few hundred this weekend, so this meeting is a nice way to end the weekend. Great to see y'all!

*******************************************************

I forgot to take pictures but I would like to add a little note about the "most exciting event" of the meeting.

There was a woman and her children that came in and found our table to ask for Charlotte's Web. At first we didn't realize she was hunting a specific book and started to explain BookCrossing to her. As soon as we understood that she was hunting based on release notes, we suspected it was KateKintail (who wasn't there yet) that had the book she wanted. KateKintail showed up just in time! It was really neat to have a book hunted and our meeting visited by someone other than the regular group.

Here is a link to the book:

Wow. A whole building full of free books! It was great seeing y'all and hitting the Book Thing with such a fun group. Definitely a fun trip and nummy Panera food to top it off. -KateKintail

Thank you to our field trip organizers! I'd never heard of the Book Thing before you guys started talking about it. Thanks for another fun day! -CreativeMGE

Sharing a Book Thing outing with my favorite book-nerds - huge fun! -florafloraflora

I loved sharing the Book Thing with you all - too bad there weren't any Baltimore BookCrossers to represent. :( (But I do work in Hunt Valley now, so I guess I could of sort of represent Balto. County :) ) Loved visiting w/ my buddies from DC/NoVa again! -MaryZee

Road Trip! The Book Thing is awesome, though Mt TBR isn't going to be happy. I can't believe we're thinking about a proposal for the 2010 convention. Go us! :) -ResQgeek

This was my first trip to the Book Thing. Such temptation I have never known! -melydia

One hour late as usual! However, I still made it to the Book Thing and found the Towson Panera (albeit with a little help). This is so much fun!!
Best to all,

Lilgrovers and I trekked up from Waldorf a little later than I would have liked but we scored some great books from our first visit to the Book Thing. The only ones that I am adding to Mt TBR/PC are the textbooks that I hope to use later for homeschooling. The rest of the books I picked up I plan to release at the Kensington Festival. Now I just need to register them all!!!
The Baltimore Panera Bread was very friendly and one young man had a bit of trouble with the idea that if he wanted to give books away he could register them himself and be BookCrossers just like us. (He wanted to donate some books to us.) And then when he finally got it he said, "Oh you mean like join the collective!" We all got a chuckle out of that.
I have so much fun with my BookCrossing friends! -crrcookie

Enjoyed meeting everyone today at the Book Thing. It was fun to wander around, finding interesting books and discussing them as we went. I'll bet people were wondering what kind of group we were, that there were so many of us discussing books (and names too). Also enjoyed chatting at Panera. What a great gathering place that is (any one of them). I hope BC/Panera get their partnership firmly established soon. It would be great if all Panera's were BC zones, like the ones around Chicago and in Florida.

Another fun BookCrossing gathering! The Book Thing is an awesome place...I can't believe I walked out of there with an idea for a release challenge. I'm looking forward to the Day of the Book next month, and who would've thought we'd be seriously thinking about trying to host a BC Convention?

Lunchtime Mini-Meet
Potbelly Sandwich Works
401 John Carlyle Street
Alexandria, VA 22314

Thursday, April 10, 2008

ResQgeek invited us all to meet him near his workplace for a lunchtime mini-meet since he would not be able to attend the Saturday meeting.

I met one of his co-workers. Her screenname is dturnip1. I'll add her to my friends list now because that is where I keep track of all the wonderful BookCrossers I meet in real life.

Since I got there late I didn't get a chance to sample the menu. The line was long and I wanted to chat more than I wanted to eat ... I didn't want to spend all of my time in line. Lilgrovers had plenty to snack on with juice and Cheerios always welcome on his tray.

The main reason that I came (other than friendly conversation with friend BookCrossers) was so ResQgeek could give me the 500 (!) BookCrossing brochures that he printed for the Day of the Book Festival in Kensington. I'll be getting to the festival earlier than he will and this way we'll have them at the beginning of the event.

After I get moved and get more familiar with the Metro we could get the chance to do more lunchtime meets. This would be especially helpful if our group needs to do some extensive planning. ;)

See, now I completely forgot that I should make an entry for the luncheon mini-meet in here...perhaps because the physical journal did not make an appearance! :o)

Originally, I had planned this mini-meet as a way to connect with some of the other active (and perhaps not-so-active) bookcrossers that seem to work in the area around my office. I was hoping to plan for some upcoming events in the immediate vicinity, and encourage people to bring books to work those days to release. However, as I could only get a firm commitment from one co-worker/bookcrosser (dturnip1), I invited any available bookcrossers to join us.

It was fun getting to know dturnip1 better (I had only met very briefly one time before), and I think we might have overwhelmed her with our enthusiasm for BookCrossing! It sounded like she might try and at least stop by to see us in Kensington, so maybe she can meet some more of us there.

I'm looking forward to the fun in Kensington in less than two weeks!

10 out of 10

It was fantastic to see others from Bookcrossing in what amounts to a very chance encounter at their monthly meeting (the Panera in Alexandria). I am there about every Saturday after my classes at the local college, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere, when lo and behold an interesting sight comes in. A large group of people come in with bags the size of mac trucks, laughing and dropping books left and right. Naturally, this gets my attention. I have been an active bookcrosser in Northern Virginia for a few years, and it is good to see other folk in the area so active! Where my job and schooling permit, I will make these meetings a regular part of my agenda, and become more involved with the local BookCrossing community.

International Day of the Book Street Festival
27 April 2008
12-5pm
Kensington, Maryland

The actual physical journal has far more information and pictures than I can add here but I'll give an overview.

Preparations for the event included making some posters. I made a poster for our goal to give away 1,000 books, posters that featured photos of past events (Kensington 2007, National Book Festival 2007, Carroll County Book Festival 2007, and local meetings), and posters that explained and promoted BookCrossing.

The final tally included the following books brought to the festival:
crrcookie 913
SqueakyChu 487
KateKintail 374
ResQgeek 212
melydia 80
CreativeMGE 57
Mom-Oyster 60
nat4lee 50
florafloraflora 31
kristamd 20
authorauthor 19

For a grand total of 2,348 available to give away.

After a great redistribution the BookCrossers took home 1,122 books.

That means we gave away 1,226 books!!!

We have various photos online at Flickr and several funny stories that are mostly summed up in the article posted by ResQgeek here.

All in all it was a great day and we had a ton of fun surpassing our goal and making it a great event for BC in DC!

Welcome BookCrosser otakuu visiting us from New Zealand!

We were thrilled to have otakuu visiting the DC area on her BookCrossing World Tour to promote the 2009 Convention in New Zealand. It was a great good fortune that brought her to our area on the day of this extraordinary festival.I made sure to leave a space in the journal just for her to pen her thoughts.

I have had a wonderful day at Kensington giving away more than 1000 books. Thanks to Zemarkable who drove me to meet MaryZee who brought me to the bookfair. It was so much fun to meet everyone especially the delightful lilgrovers, Purplypup and her sister. Their parents were pretty special too!

Thanks to one and all for the hospitality and the fun. Keep up the good work.

I nearly forgot to make an online record of our bid for the 2010 Convention. BC in DC made a valiant effort to swing the Convention vote our way but sadly it was not to be.

We wish the chosen location - Amsterdam, The Netherlands - much fun and Happy BookCrossing!

A couple really great things came out of the convention bid though. One of them is the knowledge that xanderer can make great logos! And the group will now be known as "BC in DC"!

The comments written in the journal:

Rebaann - My first meet-up :)

I came, I saw, I will probably end up with more books. - FURBALL

Well, left the parking lot at Union Station with two bags of books, arrived on other end of station at the cafe with only one bag ... bookcrossers do the math! Union Station and its archetectural beauty always get to me, no matter how many times I come. - nat4lee

Here in the pulsing heart of DC, midway between a pile of giant fudge brownies and a B. Dalton bookseller. Oh the temptation! Great to see everyone again at my second meetup. Kristamd

Finally made it! Wasted time waiting for the darn yellow train that never came! But I made it and am looking forward to a nice stressless May meeting with you fun BCers! - KateKintail

I braved major storms and broken metros but I made it! - melydia

Very cool! It's storming outside. We're seated at Corner Bakery (directly across from a B. Dalton booksellers. Good coffee, good fellowship, good fun. Cheers! - SqueakyChu

Pouring rain outside, but loits of book here, so it was worth braving the weather and traffic. Good to see everyone! - authorauthor

Great fun as always, in a new venue for us, the Corner Bakery in Union Station. I hope I'll get a JE from the bakery employee who picked up my copy of What Looks Like Crazy On An Ordinary Day! - florafloraflora

Today lilgrovers and I took the bus from base to the train station. Now that it is raining I am wondering the wisdom of trying this out today. I guess we'll get wet from the bus stop to the gate and out car. It has been great to see all the BookCrossers and this turned out to be a good location and quite convenient. I look forward to using the Metro more and doing more releases in the heart of D.C. - crrcookie

Here are the comments that were written in the journal:

melydia and theshaggyfreak arrived with suprisingly few books to share. This is melydia's third weekend in a row going to a BC meet! Anybody up for a gathering next weekend? :) (just kidding ...maybe)

Brought only 4 books this time, but they are big ones. Does that count? - FURBALL

Released book ... was picked up in less than a minute by a most intrigued(?) employee. Will wait and see, but it was a tense moment as he stood over the trash can reading the cover. - nat4lee

I saw 2 Books ... One was by Roald Dahl the name of the book is Going Solo and the other was is Daughter of the Nile by Kristiana Gregory. - purplypup

Two BookCrossing events in two weeks! I must be over my quota. Always great to see everyone. - ResQgeek

And for me it's 3 BC events in as many weeks! I'm starting to be addicted. Wait - starting? I'm excited to be here, knee-deep in books, at another Panera. Afterwards I'm TOTALLY going on a trip up to the top floor to see the Capitals' Ice Plex for the first time! Squee! - KateKintail

Better late than never! But I figured people would still be there, even after an hour and a half. - authorauthor

Navigating the DC Metro system is getting easier. I love that I have an easy acces Panera Bread! This location is a little small and crowded but that makes for more conversation! Lilgrovers is doing great on the Metro with me and we were even able to wild release a few books on the way to the meeting. crrcookie

There were some notations that there were three meetings in three weeks. Only two are formally mentioned in this journal because I (and the journal) did not make it to the meeting at the Pour House in Westminster, Maryland the weekend between the Union Station Meeting and this meeting. MaryZee was a wonderful hostess from what I have been told and I would have loved to go to that meeting and I am really sorry that I missed it because I was in the midst of a move.

BC in DC meets ABXC

13 July 2008
Audubon, Pennsylvania
Panera Bread

Three members of BC in DC (nat4lee, crrcookie and KateKintail) were able to make the trip to Audubon, PA to meet up with the Audubon BookCrossers Club (ABXC) for a very special "Two-Groups-In-One" Meeting.

Nat4lee drove himself since he wanted to get up early and make a day of seeing the historical sites (Valley Forge) in the area.

Crrcookie and KateKintail carpooled together a little later in the day. We were assisted in getting to PA by "Jill" the fabulous GPS unit that got quite exasperated with us when we jumped off the highway to release a book in Delaware just because we had never released books in DE before.

Meeting the group was fabulous. There were veteran BCers H2Omelons and PrettyPoodle (the hostess who invited us) and 3 new BCers. New BCer ivypoison had only joined BookCrossing the night before even though she had a BC book for some time prior. SherriSue76 and JudyJoy are a family pair that also recently joined and were at their first meeting.

Here is the transcription of what was written in the journal this time around:

[M]- The "Dad half" of H2Omelons

[J] - [M's] wife - the bookcrossing poodle - PrettyPoodle

Came back from Audubon after 5 hours at Valley Forge, and the smiling happy faces of the ABXC group! - nat4lee

JudyJoy loves reading books.

SherriSue76 loves reading popular fiction.

ivypoison - first timer! (joined last night)

Whoohoo! Made it to PA! WE took a small side trip to DE so I could get my first wild release in that state! We ran into a little traffic but made it in good time in the end. Great to meet new bookcrossers ... and take home good books. :) Thanks for driving cookie! Thanks for the fun time all! - KateKintail (writing too much as usual)

I made it to PA! I picked up KateKintail (and Jill the GPS) at the Branch Ave Metro Station and drove and drove. The moment we crossed into Delaware we stopped to release a book. We followed signs to the Iron Hill museum and found a charming place perfect for a couple of wild release.

We've now met 5 members of ABXC and hope to see others in the future. - crrcookie

BC in DC meeting at

Bethesda, Maryland

19 July 2008

I spent some of the morning updating the online portion of the journal so that it would be ready for the meeting today. So anyone that wants to go check the edited JEs please feel free.

Here are the comments from the book today:

I'm riding the metro on my way to the meeting and dropping books along the way. I keep getting "caught" wild releasing with people asing me "Is that your book?" I'll try to be sneakier in the future because I like metro releases now that I have had one caught. - crrcookie

melydia and theshaggyfreak love the food here - and you can't beat the company! :)

This is SqueakyChu who is so sad she missed the Pennsylvania trip but is so happy to be back in BookCrossing company again today! Best to all!!!

Great to be back amongst friends, good to see everyone in good health and good spirits!
-Best from nat4lee

Hello! Untangling myself from the cheesy strings of my French Onion Soup long enough to check in. Enjoying the cozy, cool environment of a sweltering midsummer day. - Kristamd

[crrcookie], it's such a pleasure to finally attend another BookCrossing group's meeting! Thanks so much for the warm welcome. When can I reciprocate in San Fransisco? - suetu

That's right my friends that last message was from suetu who came here to visit some family and got to visit some BookCrossers as well. It is almost like a BookCrossers exchange program since our very own ResQgeek is headed to San Fransisco in a few weeks and plans to make a meetup there as well.

I got the camera out this morning but forgot to take it with me. I know SqueakyChu got a couple of photos and I will put one of them into this JE when we both get the chance to go online and do that sort of thing.

SqueakyChu posted her pictures and gave me permission to use them. ;)

I can't see it right now but it is a group shot that shows suetu telling us about a book that she brought. Suetu is the nice looking blonde at the end of the table to the right of the picture ... it's hard to see the rest of the members of BCinDC in this picture but we all pretty much know what we all look like by now.

MaryZee - only 31 today!
florafloraflora - 12 books (7 plus the ones for other people)

melydia - 87 books (mostly for others and TBR. Dang!)

September 8, 2008

One of stinalyn's goals for this trip to D.C. was to take a tour of the Library of Congress. The opportunity was a good one for me so we decided to meet and tour together.

Much of the tour is looking at the art and architecture of the grand building. We bought some souvenirs and I got a coin for the un-convention gift raffle. It has a quote from Thomas Jefferson, "I cannot live without books." What could be more perfect for a BookCrosser?

Nat4lee organized getting BookCrossers a table at this event.

The event started outside but as I arived at noon the event was being moved inside Dewberry Hall in the Johnson Center. My arrival was perfectly timed to start the decoration process as we set up the table in a new location. The BookCrossers present at this event were nat4lee, crrcookie, authorauthor, KateKintail and lilgrovers.

This event was quiet and relaxed as people browsed the books and learned about BookCrossing. We wild released many books around campus as well despite the rain and many of them were caught and we are just waiting for the journal entries to roll in.

I took 120 books and 105 of them were left behind and didn't come home with me. Overall, the estimated books released is around 400 but we didn't keep too good of a count.

-crrcookie

It looks like KateKintail added the following note after reviewing the book at a later time...

I brought exactly 222 books! Do far a total of 0 real catches! :(

I came, I saw, I conquered, what more could I ask for but an endless sea of books, and all sorts of book lovers to give away our books to. They came to us in droves, it was invigorating! ~nat4lee

Annual LibraryThing and BookCrossing Meeting
on the steps of the Museum of Natural History at 2pm.

Long hot day! But fun to faces to screen names! ~Gilroy (from LibraryThing)

Yay for the NBF! Hope it's still here in 2009! ~stellar_dust (from LibraryThing)

Books! Books books books books books. Books books books. Books? ~Melannen (from LibraryThing)

Had a blast at the National Book festival with my BookCrossing buddies. :) ~peacebabies

This isn't my first meeting wtih the BC in DC group, but my 1st time with them at the National Book Festival. I LOVE the yellow BookCrossing wagon! ~wyldanthem

It took me one hour to get here by subway, but I'm here and having a great time. This is my favorite event of the year. It's great to see everyone. ~SqueakyChu

This was an amazing event with the wagon loaded down with 304 books that did not come home with me. I had a ton of fun and lilgrovers had a phenomenal day too charming all those that came by to browse the books. I am writing this about 2 weeks after the event and I have a 5% catch rate so far so I think that it is more than sucessful! ~crrcookie

10 out of 10

My life is full of happiness. I got to hold this book and hug some wonderful BookCrossers in Alexandria. Many handshakes for the chaps, with the exception of Lilgrovers, who has kissed me a couple of times.

The next day, we travelled down to Charleston, and had a great road trip in a van specially labelled for BookCrossing. Lots of releases, not nearly enough internet, a win in the trivia night under the leadership of lilgrovers, plenty of rain, a lot of great photographs when I get the chance to upload them, and all the joy in the world.

I love BookCrossing. And BookCrossers.

WELCOME SKYRING!

BC in DC gathered to welcome Skyring to the area. It is already Thursday and bright and early in the morning we are going to hop in the van for the road trip to the RE-doing the Charleston UnCon.

Here are some entries from the book:

Had to come all the way to Alexandria today to meet Skyring. I can see my BC in DC buddies anytime. :) (Well, almost.) Lots of good food at Quattro Formaggi and lots of books as usual. ~MaryZee

My life is filled with happiness.
And books.
Never ask why I travel to the other side of the world.
It's to meet people who share the passion.
People who make me happy!
Glad to be here in the heart of the nation.

~Skyring

Its been a long day of wandering around DC with Skyring. Its always fun to see Washington through fresh eyes. I'm glad we had so many people here to welcome him to our city. ~ResQgeek

The BCinDC group always seems to provide a little joy and inspiration in the middle of the week. Good to meet Skyring before he and the DC bookcrossers head off to Charleston for the unconvention. ~nat4lee

Arrived to two more copies of Cold Sassy Tree to replace the ones caught in DC. That BC in DC always looking out for me. Great meeting you Skyring. ~melydia (with a reluctant theshaggyfreak in tow)

I managed to drag out GroverMOWB to this event but I think maybe he just wanted to meet the men I'd be on a weekend roadtrip with. It's hard to believe its really happening. ~crrcookie

Re-doing the Charleston UnConvention
October 10-13, 2008
Charleston, SC

On Friday morning we loaded up the newly christened "Bally Van" with ResQgeek at the wheel, Skyring riding shotgun, and crrcookie and lilgrovers chilling in the back with the DVD player. It was a long drive but we made good time and it wasn't too long before Skyring was snapping a picture of RingBear on the dash crossing the bridge into Charleston.

Friday evening's activity of a meet and greet at the coffee shop put faces to screennames (and real names) as we mixed and mingled. It was a nice gathering that caused lots of laughter more than once. There were BookCrossers from near and from far!

Saturday morning we awoke to the threat of rain but that didn't stop us from heading to the Farmer's Market in Marion Square to release some books. I brought out the MBCZ wagon and we got raincoats (baggies) on most all of the books before the rain came pouring down. It was great fun to leave books all over the Farmer's Market and the location was great for a little shopping as well.

The Saturday night event was TRIVIA! We formed up teams and competed to see who knew the most useless information. Lilgrovers had a delightful time and was caught "cheating" by "reading" us answers from a large hardcover book he insisted on looking at. We had Birthday cake for Joan and Bruce and ResQgeek was given a nice large piece ... just ask him about the chocolate cake. ;)

Sunday allowed some of us the opportunity to attend services and listen to the Czuk's sing in the church choir. It was absolutely beautiful and caused many a chill. We met for some brunch and then things started to wind down as we shopped a little and tried to decide what we were going to have for dinner.

By Monday morning the crowd was dwindling and we had to start saying good-bye. Skyring left from the Charleston airport to begin another strange itinerary of many cities and many airports. Solittletime hitched a ride in the BallyVan rather than taking the train to D.C. She is going to visit a friend in VA before continuing on to her home in Maine. It was great to have her along for some conversation ... she could have read a book on the train I suppose but loads more fun to talk to BookCrossers me thinks.

The UnConvention was over far too soon but a great time was had by all. I look forward to future conventions and all the fun that they will entail.

The picture is from Marion Square - before the rain started!

Registering Party at crrcookie's House
Bolling Air Force Base
Washington, D.C.
13 December 2008

LibraryThing member Melannen donated a few hundred books to BC in DC. I picked them up in Severn, MD on 3 Dec 2008 to store in the garage until time for the party.
We're going to have good food and good fun!
~crrcookie

The idea was that everyone would bring a laptop if they have it and we would all get on the wireless network and register some books! With the desktops we had just enough computers to keep everyone busy. We had a great spread of food with everyone bringing a little tidbit and I served pasta and breadsticks for dinner.

The planned game of the evening was to bring a few books that you had wrapped up on the outside of the wrapping paper would be written the first line of the book. It is really hard to choose a book you might want to read based only on the first line. It's also a lot of fun to find out that books aren't always what they seem by first impression.

We got most of the books organized, registered, and put away during the party. I'll still have some to register on my own but lots of work did get done in the midst of all the fun and laughter.

And some last words from the journal:

The gift exchange was so much fun! We have to do this again!
~melydia

Merry Chistmas everyone!
~florafloraflora

crrcookie had a brilliant idea for a book gift exchange based on good first lines. My submission, "he never should have taken that shortcut."
It was all great fun, food, and friends (and tons of books as always)!

~nat4lee

Wonderful release party! Loved the food everyone brought and the wrapped books were fun! Happy holidays BC in DC! And happy registering! :)
~KateKintail

Happy Holidays everyone! Now that I've eaten and drunk and picked books to take home I guess I'll go help register some more.
Cheers!

~SqueakyChu

The photo is of melydia reading one of the first lines off of the wrapping paper. We are all wondering what book is inside and who is going to be brave enough to give it a try!

And so we reach the end ...

The end of this book was conveniently timed with the end of 2008. It's been an interesting ride with BookCrossing and lots of new friends.

The journal is a requested item for "BC in DC" functions and events so we are set to continue in 2009 with a new journal, The "BC in DC" Meeting Journal.

The photo with this entry is of crrcookie holding this journal and doing a bit of reminiscing at the Holiday Party as we filled the journal. You may recognize the page as having the picture from Journal Entry #10 the Kensington Day of the Book 2007 event.

This book will always be a treasured part of BC in DC history and I hope that newcomers and visitors will enjoy looking through it. The only future journal entries will be from people who have read the journal and wish to journal it after reading it. This book will be a part of crrcookie's Permanent Collection even if there are additional journal entries.

Attention Previous Journalers:

This book has travelled across country and will be attending the Kansas City UnCon with crrcookie.

I just wanted everyone to know that even though we are not actively adding to this book that it does still exist and that I know I still enjoy looking through it from time to time.

This book has not been rated.

The book is safely back in my possession following the Kansas City UnCon and will be stored away until the next time I wish to show it off to BookCrossers that may be interested in it.

I know that several people commented that they enjoyed looking through this book and the other photo album that I brought but I do not know if anyone will be journaling here. If I do get additional journal entries then I will journal this book again to mark it as in my possession.
