Teenage angst, girls, friendships and Bamber Gascoigne. The story of a young man's first year at Uni, his first love and how his talent for general knowledge for got him on 'University Challenge'. It was an enjoyable read and David Nicholl's first novel - I hope he writes more.

On its way to redhouse as an RABCK after spotting it on her wishlist :)

A very enjoyable read, although I've never been a teen-aged boy, I recognised where he was coming from!
Very funny and also very touching.
Thanks for passing this book on, I'll keep it moving.

Synopsis
It's 1985 and Brian Jackson has arrived at university with a burning ambition - to make it onto TV's foremost general knowledge quiz. But no sooner has he embarked on 'The Challenge' than he finds himself falling hopelessly in love with his teammate, the beautiful and charismatic would-be actress, Alice Harbinson. When Alice fails to fall for his slightly over-eager charms, Brian comes up with a foolproof plan to capture her heart once and for all. He's going to win the game, at any cost, because - after all - everyone knows that what a woman really wants from a man is a comprehensive grasp of general knowledge...Starter for Ten is a comedy about love, class, growing-up and the all-important difference between knowledge and wisdom. Are you up to the challenge of the funniest novel in years?

I read this book in in a day and did enjoy it ... however, I can't say that I liked Brian at all. I just wanted to shake him out of his unrequited love for Alice (very unfair of me, I know), and I didn't like his habit of making stupid comments to fill in awkward conversational gaps (although I laughed out loud at his gaffe about what happened to Mrs Harbinson when playing charades!).

I really enjoyed this. Yes, Brian was a little annoying at times, and his infatuation with the awful Alice was hard to fathom. But he was basically a decent sort trying to make his mark on University life (and sometimes succeeding, although not in the way he had planned).
Some of his gaffes and social faux-pas were so toe-curlingly cringeworthy that I read parts of the book with my fist in my mouth and the climax (which I won't give away), was brilliant and inspired.
David Nicholls has a great ear for dialogue - it seemed to be spoken by real people, rather than just characters on a page.

Thanks for starting this ring, redhouse.

It's now on its way to Pookledo.

This book is agin something that I would never have chosen in a million years if it hadn't been so highly recommended. Having said that there were some sections of the characters life that made you cring laugh and want to cry in turn. i recognised the outsider aspect of the character wanting to be on the inside of the group.
i can see a sequal to this in years to come and that might be interesting to see how Jackson changes.
