9 out of 10

I have just finished this and have no Idea what to write about it. I think I can sum it up in 1 single word - FABULOUS!!!! this seemed to tie up the other 2 books and was well worth the read :o)
Personally I think that Sabriel is the best of the trilogy (probably because everything is new and there are no expectations), but the other 2 (Lirael and this) are fabulous, and follow the entire story through to a fantastic conclusion. I recommend this series to everyone. Young and Old!

Thanks again for sharing.

I will be sending it on at my next trip to the post office :o)

9 out of 10

I just finished this, it was very good! I didn't enjoy it as much as Lirael, but I think I probably should have read them together rather that with a 4 month intermission. I have some critique for this book. Please don't read this if you haven't read the book yet, I do have a bit of a spoiler in it. SPOILER ALERT!!!!

I found the first half of the novel dragged a bit. I love the characters and setting, but it lacked direction a bit. The scenes that should be nailbiters for the reader (the encounter down the well, the encounter between Sam and Hedge at the stream) are over a bit too quickly and easily. The second half brings us back to the driving plot that gives Nix' work its power, and was really good.

I think the book would have benefitted from more trips into death by Lirael or the other characters - these forays bring a tension to the previous books in this trilogy that keep the reader on the edge of their seat and I think that is part of what is missing from the first half of this book. And the wallmaker powers of Sam could have been showcased a bit more and developed to a greater degree. Also, I didn't get a strong feeling of the Destroyer's power from this book despite its being alluded to continuously, until the last chapters and I think that was a bit too late. I thought that the ending was a bit of a cop out - I think tragedy is a healthy thing to incorporate into an epic, and the final twists are just a bit too pat an ending. I suspect Nix did this to leave the plot open for further adventures which is fine but I still found it a bit too warm and fuzzy at the end.

I really liked the complexity given to Mogget's character in this book and the development of our understanding of the Disreputable Dog.

There is a metal bookmark that came with the book to me, if this belongs to anyone out there please PM me in the next couple of days with your address and I'll send it back to you, otherwise I'll send it on to the next person in the bookray. :-)

Warsaw/Poland - I'm not sure what held up the book but it was waiting in the mail room for me this morning. I may not be able to get to it for a bit as I've got IB exams coming up soon but I don't anticipate taking too long with it. Thanks for sending it jmcbeth!
