9 out of 10

This is a brilliant book about David Braesher's expereinces in mountaineering. He tells of learning to rock climb in the US as a teen and his first adventures on ice and snow. He mentions the feats of the great Alpine and Himalayan climbers of the seventies, who I remember from my days of reading climbing magazines (as an interested mountain walker - not a climber).

He writes movingly about his friends, fellow mountaineers, who died on the high tops. He narrates the tragic events on Everest in May 1996 with compassion and tells of his grief and anger at the events of that day.

I really enjoyed reading about his climbing life to date and hope to see the IMAX film of Everest sometime.

The view towards Ben MacDui. We decided not to bag that Munro too as the snow was very icy and we didn't have crampons with us.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

RELEASE NOTES:

Released on the summit of Caringorm (1244m/3886ft) beside the weather station. It was gey windy there today, so I hope it wasnae blown away with one of the gusts!

OK, from the north and the ski road car park Cairn Gorm is not a particularly pretty/wild/rugged mountain with the plethora of ski equipment and funicular railway, but venture beyond this and the corries make for spectacular mountain scenery. We headed for the main ridge above Corie an t-Sneachda and Corie and Lochan and wandered across towards Lochan Bhuide for views towards Ben MacDui. We decided not to walk to the next Munro, due to the very high winds which made walking on the frozen snow tricky. However, we ascended the main peak to the cairn and weather station.
