Although, not surprisingly, things do wind up okoay in the end, there's a lot of really horrible stuff that happens before we get there - much more than in any of the other Pierce books that I have read (the explanation in the acknowledgments might be part of it). I'm glad that I still have a couple more Tortall books to look forward to. This is definitely a world I am eager to return to.
