8 out of 10

Of all the books I have read on this subject, this one is the most balanced, and gives an insight into the other team members as well as McCarthy and Keane. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

I must be weird too, cos Gizmopuddy kindly thought of me and passed it on. It may go in the bin if it's pro former-manager-who-must-not-be-named.

8 out of 10

A good review of the awful sequence of events that saw the best player in the world miss a World Cup finals, a finals he believed that Ireland could win, and all for the sake of the manager's ego. Paul Howard draws a lot of the threads together from other sources and presents it as an overview, and it works well. Though irrelevant to the subject matter, and over-long in that context, the pieces about the young Shay Given and Holland, Kilbane, McAteer et al are enjoyable enough.

"In his nine years at Old Trafford, Keane has developed into arguably the best footballer in the world...Not since Diego Maradona has a player won so many important games on his own"

The book has survived its across-seas trip and arrived here today.
I'm very anxious to start this book (I'm going to bump it up on my TBR list... shhh don't tell anyone!)
As I was telling Sirroy, we barely got ANY news about the McCarthy/Keane problems, so that's why I'm eager to read about what actually happened. Kind of a sad soccer situation over here really, but hey, not much I can do about it!

Anyways, thanks so much for passing this along!!

8 out of 10

This book brought back some memories! At the time, I was working downtown Toronto and was basically out of the house for 12 hours a day, working for 9.5 hours + commute time. With the time difference, this put the round robin games being played at about 7/7:30 in the morning. I would get into work having missed the first 30 minutes, and would pretend to make myself busy by the trading side of the floor where the TV screens were tuned into the World Cup. But as soon as the markets started up, the TV stations got changed. Needless to say, I didn't have a chance to watch much of the games except for the weekend games. And really, I haven't gotten a chance to watch the Irish team play since the World Cup. The news of Roy Keane leaving the team was front page news for you folks for plenty of days I'm sure. It didn't even make the front page of the sports section here. Infact, if I remember correctly, the news was reported on about a third of a column. This book definately gave the insight to what happened that was not reported here.

I found it neither pro-Keane or pro-McCarthy, which is good. But I've learned to take everything with a grain of salt, as I'm sure there is bias in this book. From the sounds of it, Keane is a stubborn guy that can't be managed, and McCarthy is a push over that tries to be everyone's best friend - not exactly what you need in a football coach. As the book describes at the end, there are so many "what if" scenarios. The most important "what if" is what if Roy Keane was actually playing - could Ireland have won the World Cup? We'll never know.

The book also tries to get more personal with the Irish squad. I must admit, I by the time i was about 60% through the book, my favourite players from the tournament hadn't been mentioned and I was beginning to wonder if they were going to be talked about at all - Matt Holland, Robbie Keane, and Ian Harte (only because I play the same position as him, we all know he didn't have a great tournament). Though it really had nothing to do with the McCarthy/Keane feud, it was nice and interesting to ge the background information on the players.

Overall, I thought this book was insightful to what happened. Thanks for sending it to me so I could read it!
I'm going to finish the Matt Holland book, then try to give away these books as a pair to anyone that will have them.

And of course, I can't leave without posting an autographed picture of another Irish player now, can I? :)
Leeds uniform though, sorry!

RELEASE NOTES:

Sending to tyvmdear as a RABCK. Her daughter is a big soccer fan. I'm not sure if she's an Irish supporter, but maybe this book will convince her to be an Ireland fan? (Then again, maybe it won't.. from an outsiders view this book isn't good persuasion to support the team!)

Thanks so much.
My daughter will be thrilled with this book. She is a real big "Soccer" fan. I'm not sure if she is an Irish fan but anything about soccer and the world cup is enough I'm sure.

On a side note.. I am sick of hearing about soccer every single day (in and out). LOL
