Picked this up at the Reading meet today. Jostein Gardner's Solitaire Mystery is in my top ten reads for this year, so how could I resist this one?!

It's the end of November and Joachim and his fsther are looking for an Advent calendar. they venture into an old bookshop which has a couple of desiogns on sale, but then Joachim notices an old faded calendar hanging over the till. The shopkeeper tells him that the market flower seller, john, had left the calendar there a long time ago, and he gives it to joachim. When the boy opens the first door, a tiny slip of paper falls out. he unfolds it and discovers the first part of a magical Christmas story.

The story is of an ever-increasing group of pilgrims travelling from Scandinavia to Belthlehem, on a trip back through time to visit jesus' birthplace. As each door on the calendar is opened, another part of the story falls out, and Joachim and his parents are soon obsessed with the story.

At the same time, they realis that the Advent story is somehow connected to the disappearance of a young girl fifty years before. Will they unwrap the Christmas Mystery before Christmas Day?

This book takes an interesting look at the traditional nativity story and intertwines it with some of the histroy of the spread of Christianity throughout the world, and some basic philosophy. It's a very simplistic book, probably aimed more at older children than adults, and although I enjoyed it, I didn't find it as captivating as either of Gaarder's other books. (Possibly this is because I'm less interested in religion that philiosophy) I also found the story of the missing girl a bit far fetched. This is a book that makes you think a bit, though, and thus it's worth reading.

I'm going to take this along to the Henley picnic tomorrow, and will either pass it on to someone or wild release it.
