Am a fan of Elton's and have read most of his books. This one has slipped by me so I will add it to my TBR pile after finding it cheaply secondhand.

This IMHO, is one of his better books.
It centres around the issue of drugs in society, the law and its failure in dealing with the issue.
Its clear that Elton is FOR the legalization of drugs, arguing that by making them illegal, it connects ordinary people with the criminal world, and the inflated prices make the criminals very very rich, impacts upon society further.
He makes his point by following the story of a young girl, trapped into prostitution and addiction; a drug addled pop star, and a politician and his family who are trying to pass the legalization bill.

The book also says much about journalism, politic, and public opinion.

This is a very gritty book and one that makes you think. Although Elton makes some valid points about drugs and their legalization, I felt he glossed over their side effects and dangers and the impact this has on society.
It's a complex issue.

Last word: don't expect happy endings, well...not TOTALLY happy endings, at least.

Picked up at the Perth BC Meetup this morning. I've also read quite a bit of Elton's stuff, but not this one :-)

I picked this up last weekend to help me get out of a bit of a reading slump - and it worked! Read most if not all of it last weekend and really enjoyed it. I agree with libertine101 that this is one of Elton's better books -biting satire at it's best. And, actually, the premise he suggests - that drugs are totally legal and government controlled does seem to make a lot of sense. I loved the multi-point of views. I think this is one of his more ambitious books and he pulls it off!

Taking to this month's BC Meetup at the Art Gallery
