I love the Hobbit! My favourite Tolkien.....

Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit living a normal hobbit life. Then Gandalf the grey turns his quiet life into an adventure that will impact the rest of his existance. Encoutering races of men, elves, trolls, orcs, dwarves, dragons and goblins, he tries to change the way people forever look at the somber hobbits.

It is said that "The Hobbit" is a children’s book, but I would doubt it. Too many ponies are dying. Imagine, children who love ponies so much, and here they are always eaten by goblins and the dragon. And, boo hoo ... the poor dragon must also die. How childlike is it to extinguish the probably last survivor of a rare and ancient species ... for gold?

Of course I liked this book. Meanwhile I feel so at home in Middle-Earth ^__^
"The Hobbit" is a straight, neatly brushed adventure, and you meet several of the figures that will appear later in the LotR-trilogy too. Tolkien is - besides a linguistic wiz - a mighty inventor of history and geography and magical life of all kinds.

But I regretted very much to have read it after the trilogy. It seemed to be such a brief pleasure. I started to read ... and already it ended, dang! I’d say that it is merely an appetizer for the epic world. The editor even added the bait of the first chapter from „The Fellowship ...“, tricky. And now I am tempted to read LotR all over again. No, no, no! Renounce that, spy! Have a look at your huge, increasing mt.TBR!

Got it from spy-there at our Meetup tonight. (Under strict conditions as she mentioned, which I'm willing to fulfill of course... I hope you don't mind, Sunneschii? I'll be very nice to your book - I promise - and read it just after my current reading.)

03-13-2007:
No need for a Release Alert I guess...
I liked the book as well and it made me want to read LOTR all over again. But I guess I won't do it, especially since spy gave me that biiiig book today. ;-)
