The Lovely Bones: A Novel

I think I'm one of the few people who didn't absolutely love this book. I thought it was well-written, and loved the first part of it, but all in all, I didn't really enjoy reading it--and I've read it twice!
Am interested in starting a U.S. bookray with it. PM me with location and address if you're interested.

Woo-hoo! I've been looking forward to this one!
What an interesting book! It definitely lived up to everything I'd heard about it. Thanks so much, Hannah-B, for giving me the chance to read it! I'm pm'ing HallieK today to get her address and send it on its way.
Got this in the mail yesterday. Looking forward to reading it!
Arrived in the mail today. (Thanks HallieK) I've already gotten through the first chapter and a half, and I'm intrigued! Reading about heaven, and grief through the eyes of this author is both haunting and refreshing. I'm already impressed with her sensitve writing style, and creative choices of words, similes and metaphors. Ah, if only I could be so creative!
2/9/2005: Amazing! Thought-provoking, heart-wrenching, and wise, this book caught me in its web, and I finished it today. I couldn't put it down. (Doesn't hurt that I am currently unemployed and have nothing to do but read :) I have long been fascinated with the ways the heart heals itself, each process a separate journey for each human being. Sebold weaves together a tale of human suffering and love, and just a touch of romance and murder mystery. The approach is so novel that one can't help but be impressed with the originality.
2/13/2005: Received a PM today from Bookworm0464 that she has already read this book as part of a trade. I've decided to open it up as another bookray. To join, PM me.

Firstly, many thanks for the opportunity to read this as part of the bookray - much appreciated! But what a disappointment. I guess it was supposed to be a sort of "dead girl's rites of passage" story. It started well, with a very underplayed murder. And then nothing happened. And nothing continued to happen til the end of the book. Bits where some excitement could have been added (eg Hal finding out about the other murder, and the two times Harvey went after Lindsey) could have woken the reader up a bit, but again NOTHING HAPPENED! However, it really scraped bottom when we had that ludicrous scene of Susie and Ruth changing places! And Harvey's death: "Oh, I suppose I'd better kill off the murderer now, after all we can't have any loose ends can we?". Trite. Such a wasted idea.

The Lovely Bones were in my postbox today, yeeeppppiiieeeehh! I will read it as soon as I've finished the book I'm currently reading.
Thx for continuing the ray RedheadRaye and for sending it to me Flambard!!!

This book didn't really touch me very much. I like the idea of someone watching her loved ones even after she's dead, I'm glad that every member of her family and all her friends somehow managed to go on living, to live a good live.
But it was all just a story to me and not a book that made me think. I agree with flambard, there's just not enough happening and too much stagnation.

I will bring the book to the Post Office today so that it can start its journey to New Zealand. What a shame that I can't somehow climb and hide in the envelope, I would love to go to NZ ;-)

Really enjoyed reading 'the lovely bones' - although some people have said the subject matter is a little depressing, it is still very well written and the 'view from heaven' is an interesting perspective.
Also apologies for the delay in making a journal entry - i have now passed the book onto jessvb - thanks for organising the bookray and sending the book all the way to NZ!
I was really looking forward to this read but unfortunately was rather disappointed. I didn't feel very connected with Susie due to her being dead from the beginning and this meant I didn't feel very engaged with the book at all. Also agree with flambard's comments about the sense of nothing happening, it just seemed to drift. The icing on the cake was Susie's bizarre return to earth - what was that all about!?! Sending to cat02886 today.
I received this in the mail today. Thank you for sharing. Please understand that I did get bombarded with at least 4 other bookrings this week. So I have about 4 books to read before this one. I will post again when I start reading.
I am almost done reading this. Sorry it took me so long. I am PM Bunneybee for address. Thanks for sharing!

Arrived yesterday in the mail, but didn't journal until today. It will go on a short TBR stack to be read after the current book! Although I am the last one in the ray's list, I will try to keep it moving after I'm done. Thanks for the ray, RedHeadRaye!

I have to say, I was a bit disappointed, too. From the way the book grabbed ahold of me right from the start, I thought there might be more going on through the rest of it. I expected SOME sort of justice or closure on the killing, but it left me hanging. I did enjoy the way LIFE unfolded for the living characters though, and seeing how some of them coped (or not), although overall things did seem a bit depressing. I also liked the idea that the spirits of our loved ones can still watch us from heaven, though I would hope that our loved ones wouldn't be so unhappy being up there. Anyway, I liked the chance to read the book but didn't find it what I'd call a 'must-read'. Despite that though- I love books enough to share them and this went off today on yet another bookray. :-)
Enjoy!
Enjoy!
I received this book in the mail today. I will get it out to the next person (and journal) as soon as possible! :) Thanks!
Sent this on to the next person Jan. 23.
This book was a lot better than I expected it to be. I had heard reviews saying it was a gross book with extremely graphic details of the scene where Susie was raped and killed. I didn't feel like it was as graphic as some said it was.
I liked that Susie could watch over Earth from her heaven. Although not a lot happened on Earth that one would consider overly exciting, that is how life is. I'm sure if my loved ones were watching me, they would be bored to tears. ;) I'm not sure yet how I feel about Ruth and Susie switching places for that small amount of time. I admit that I found it touching, but I'm not sure yet if I feel like it fit with the rest of the story or not.
I really hoped through the entire book that Susie's body would have been found. Wouldn't you think that the sink hole would be one of the first places the police would start searching for things like that? Maybe they need to watch more CSI or something. ;)
