Journal Entry 3 by Velvis from Lisbon, Ohio USA on Friday, November 12, 2004
It was actually on mile 6 of the Greenway Trail. Between mile marker 5 and 6. Therefore, two miles were added to my hike. I walked from mile marker 3 to mile marker 6, thinking, "Hey, there's no covered bridge on the bike trail!" It was on the way back that I saw the sign and realized that the covered bridge was slightly off-track. I found the book and was very pleased with myself.

On the trail back, however, I realized that I had overestimated how much daylight I had left. The last mile was walked in the dark, with no reassuring streetlights. Every woodland noise was magnified. I'm thinking I'm going to torn apart by wolves or shot by rogue deer hunters. My last gasped words to my orange-vested killers/rescuers will be, "Tell my wife to sue the crap out you, you gun-toting microcephalic SOBs!"

This thing had BETTER be a heartbreaking work of staggering genius!

Interesting book. What worked for me were the humorous rants. They often made me laugh out loud.

At the same time, realizing that Eggers was mining his (and others') lives for the sake of the...exorcism?...of his personal demons was vaguely creepy and disturbing.

I find his final claim that he was doing all of this for (to?) us, the readers, spurious. I wonder how his younger brother, Toph, turned out. Okay, I hope. He ought to be in his early twenties by now.

On the basis of this book, I'd like to check out McSweeney's Quarterly, a literary journal of sorts he publishes, and his "Non-Required Reading" collections.

This is the first book that I caught in this area. I'm very excited. I enjoyed the early morning walk with my dog Medea. No one was on the trail at the time and it was peaceful and quiet followed by the excitement of finding a book on a bench.
