I was looking forward to reading this after all I had heard about it, but was sadly disappointed. Maybe it just wasn't my type of book.

As it is on a lot of people's wishlist I am starting a ray for it

Journal Entry 6 by Hellie from South Shields, Tyne and Wear United Kingdom on Friday, February 25, 2005
Hi all. I started this book Wed night, and couldn't sleep last night so I sat up and finished it. By close to the end it reduced me to tears! I thought it was beautifully written, and as I am very much into southern american history - civil rights etc, I founf the civil rights/black.white references very interesting.
I thought the characters were very believable - though I had guessed August knew Lily's secret. I found May a very strange but likeable character, and ditto Lily, though Rosaleen seemed at times to be pushed to the sidelines, as thought she was the way for Lily to escape then had little use really......bar the whole blacks/whites accepted into homes issue which I thought was well tackled.
For a while I wondered if all was not as it seemed with her mum, though sadly on that score I was wrong - though at times her dad's actions did not always ring true.
That said it was a beautifully written, moving book, which I am so glad I have had a chnce to read. Thanks Gizmopuddy for sharing it with us.
Pming Caro1 now for addy to send it along - tried last night but being a muppet I misread the UK as part of her addy. it'll be in post monday if I get address by then!
Looking forward to seeing what the rest of you think of it....

Arrived today. Can't wait to start reading.

Journal Entry 8 by Caro1 from Newark On Trent, Nottinghamshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, March 8, 2005
This was for the most part, a really enjoyable read. I loved the very poetic and visual descriptions of the South Carolinian countryside, the real sense of that period of history, the detailed information about beekeeping, and the vivid (though perhaps rather stereotypical) characters. By the end of the story though, I was left feeling slightly uncomfortable, as if I’d overdosed on something just too sweet and sickly.

Has been posted to KatColorado in Switzerland.

A captivating book, I read it almost in one piece. I enjoyed the story because it was comforting and simple without being boring. I liked the descriptions of the women, their way of dealing with life, the historic parts.

Loved it, loved it, loved it! A quick, short read and I was sad to see it end! This was a simple story, but very endearing. You find yourself wishing that you could come across a group of people that you just "fit" with as Lily did with the Boatwrights. I'm curious about other books by this author! Thanks Gizmopuddy!!!
