Very interesting concept. Not my favorite of Crichton's books, but it was enjoyable.

Journal Entry 3 by guinaveve from Mason, Ohio USA on Monday, November 15, 2004

I got an email notification that this book was being released around the block from me, so I went to see if it was still there. Thank you PepperVL! edited to add: I just finished this book. The premise was very interesting and the story was pretty good. In reading the first part, I thought it was technically worded intentionally to make a unprobable scenerio sound real. The actual storyline seemed to take awhile to set up in accordance to the size of the book. It is a quick read though, and overall I enjoyed it. www.bookrelay.com SJ's Horrors accepted by Maurean

Journal Entry 9 by AmberMoon from Hull, East Yorkshire United Kingdom on Tuesday, July 04, 2006
My husband just finished this book. I doubt I'll get around to it anytime soon, so I'll be passing it along. Written in 1972, this sci-fi novel explores some interesting concepts, somewhat reminiscent of Clockwork Orange. My husband enjoyed Crichton's novel The Great Train Robbery, which was also one of his pioneering works but in the genre of historical fiction, more than this one. He was entertained, however, and what more can we ever really ask?

Journal Entry 11 by Cyzaki from Enfield, Greater London United Kingdom on Sunday, June 17, 2007
I enjoyed this book, but you do have to set your mind back to 1971 in order to properly enjoy it. You have to remember that computers weren't at all commonplace back then, otherwise a lot of things make no sense. However the concept is a good one, and it does raise a lot of questions, like where do machines stop and people begin? Not one of Crichton's best but definitely worth reading.
