I never did read this for the course I was doing but am going to try it today - although I maintain that short stories really aren't my thing!

I don't do short stories, but I'm very glad I did these :) They are engaging and yet each is satisfying. I usually avoid short stories because they either lack development and are not engaging or because, having developed, I'm left wanting more - they are not satisfying. The more I read of Alexander McCall Smith the harder it is to remember that he is a male writer. Highly recommended and now offered as a ring.

Arrived today, thank you! Although I have already started two other books, I couldn't stop myself and have a taste of this book with my breakfast coffee, so I am already in the middle of the "Wonderful Date". I just love McCall Smith's prosa! In the picture: Zurich

And it's a 9 points from me too! I am seldom enthusiastic about short stories, and if I am buying a book I'd rather opt for a novel or at times poetry, before grabbing a volume with short stories, but these are no standard short stories...there's magic, despair, love, pain, warmth, laughter, smiles, and all the rainbow of the human comedy, really. It's difficult to name a favourite one, as all of them I liked for different reasons. I will buy a copy for my private collection this weekend, and keep my eyes peeled for more from this author. Thanks so much for sharing this book, Laura0141. I am shipping it tomorrow to cloggy...I hope she will enjoy it as much as I did.

Journal Entry 10 by cloggy from London , Greater London United Kingdom on Monday, October 10, 2005
Got it in the post. Thanks Yowlyy I enjoyed this book more than I thought I was going to. Short stories are normally not really my thing, but this collection of dates and encounters are sometimes touching and often disturbing. I didn't understand the significance of the postcard (of a Fra Angelico painting) until the very last story. Lovely. Thanks everyone for sharing.

I enjoyed these short stories. They are certainly in a different style to his other work I have read, ie No 1 Ladies Detective Agency series and 2 1/2 Pillars of Wisdom. The postcard is beautiful and complements the final story very well. Off tomorrow to the next reader. I am definitely a fan of this writer.

I don't quite know what to think about this book. I read it quite qucikly, as each story was well written and absorbing, but I'm not particularly sure that I actually enjoyed it overall. I found the end of most of the tales a little unsatisfactory (yes, I know they are written like that :-) Maybe that's one of the reason's why I rarely read short story collections! Off to tiggsybabes next.

Fabulous stories. I'm a big fan of Alexander McCall Smith & have enjoyed the Ladies Detective series, Professor Van Igelfeld books, the newspaper stories & the ones about the lady philosopher. I think Heavenly Date was my favourite, though a bit sad at the end as I'm a mother myself. I do enjoy short stories as I can dip in out out & read them in my busy family life. Thanks for sharing :) Update - 2 June. PMed Katayoun for her address.
