Really Good read if you like to read about history and other cultures. It was shocking to see the ritual and abuse these girls went through to become geishas. good luck book find a good home!

I found it rather a slow start (may have been what was going in my life at the time), but after a few chapters, it really captured my interest and I wanted to see what path her life took.

It arrived! Safe and sound...

I have wanted to read this one for ages, so I look forward to snuggling up by the fireplace with a cup o' tea and a great book, between Christmas and New Years (when the kids are busy with new playthings and I can sneak some me-time!)

I'll be ready to pass it along before the end of the month, I'm sure.

Ahhhh... this was a stunningly beautiful book. It's poetic and descriptive portrayal of life as a geisha was believable... and almost visual. The story itself was extremely well done. I found the character development to be somewhat predictable, but not overly sentimental. I wish the end part of the book -- the last 20 pages or so, were more detailed. I wanted to know MORE about what happened to her during that time, but I understand why the focus was on her life before its turning point, rather than after.

I enjoyed this book a great deal. I am pleased to send it on to its next reader.

Well, I must say that Golden had me fooled. I thought it was an actual memoir until I read his little blurb at the end. He showed himself to be a master at description with this book. Absolutely beautiful... Although, I wasn't that crazy about the story.

Frankly, I was disappointed in Sayuri. What she did to Nobu was simply mean and purely selfish. And her pining after the Chairman had me wanting to yell *get over it!* several times. The end seemed rather rushed also. Within the last few pages her entire life changes in the blink of an eye and we are left to wonder about the cracks that Golden didn't fill in. Not a very fulfilling storyline...

Still a very beautifully written story and I would recommend it to anyone, but for that reason only.

I almost sent this book on without reading it. I have so much going on right now, I didn't think I could concentrate on it. I'm so glad I changed my mind. Wonderful book, not at all sentimental (which I thought it would be) and beautifully written. I never felt sorry for Sayuri, but her life was always interesting. The depiction of life in Japan before and after the war was well done. I highly recommend this to anyone.

What a great book! Whilst reading this, I don't know why but I thought it was a true story so I have to say that my only disappointment was upon reading the acknowledgements (you should know I must REALLY like a book to read acknowledgements!) that I found out it was a work of fiction.
With that said, the book was completely captivating! I have always had a fascination with Japan so I was able to become totally immersed in the book. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to read this!!

I found the book on a park bench in Boston Common while on vacation. I used it as travel reading. Then I brought it back to Nicaragua where I live and will share with it and the BookCrossing.com page with my monthly book club.

I thought the book was great. In Nicaragua, we are always analyzing women's issues and the historical lack of power and limited choices that oblige them to make hard decisions about their lives. "Geisha" was another example of this phenomenon in a different time and culture. Golden is a talented writer. I had to keep reminding myself that the book was a novel and not a biography.
